Re: The Official Alex Albon Thread
Wow, that does not sound great indeed. With the Singapore race known for being one of the toughest physically on the calendar, De Vries might get another race this year?

Re: Engine regs 2026
I think the MGU-H is indeed connected to the turbocharger, but they are only removing that, not the turbo. It would be interesting to see which component had most failures, MGU-H or MGU-K. Based on data from F1 Fansite for years 2018[1] through to 2021[2], a total of 291 MGU-H units were used versu...

Re: Engine regs 2026
Am I anywhere close here? Well yes[1], except only Mercedes did the split design initially[2]. Recall that a electric motor works as a generator (and vice versa), so you could do a traditional turbo but with an engine connected to the shaft. To reduce turbo lag just have the electric motor spin up ...

Re: Engine regs 2026
I didn't say that MGU-H is the same as a regular turbo. They 1.6 turbo V6 configuration stays as far as I understand it. It is the regeneration from the heat that they will do away with. Aha, my misunderstanding then. For some reason I've always seen MGU-H as a combination of the the turbo and elec...

Yes?
Ok so the MGU-H is a bit more than a regular turbo, but my point still stands I think. It's surely a complex and costly piece of kit, both from a development and manufacturing perspective.

Re: Engine regs 2026
Sustainable fuel is totally duh at this point. Keeping the V6 unchanged makes sense cost-wise, as does dropping the turbo, surely it's a significant cost driver. A 470hp electrical motor should provide for some great acceleration, provided the tires can put the power down. So tire management might b...

Re: How Long Does Formula 1 As A Sport Have Left???
I think electric will be a greater part of F1 as technology improves, but barring a significant breakthrough I don't see battery tech making a full Formula 1 race possible for quite a while. Given the extraordinary cost of everything else in F1 I fail to see the issue with F1 just using sustainable ...

Re: Track limits poll
The track is the track, and they should race on it rather than outside of it.
I get that it's hard to judge inside the car, but then racing in F1 isn't a walk in the park to begin with. They all have some very detailed sims, so surely that could aid with this as well.

Some of the street tracks tend to provide entertaining races as far as I'm concerned, though there are some real lemons in there too.
Also, not like most of the Tilke tracks are _that_ much better than the best street tracks.

For sure, and I'm not downplaying back issues since I've had back surgery myself, but when F1 politics are involved I'm always sceptic about the honesty of the words and actions of the drivers. Re: Sprint Qualifying....
Sunday morning warm-up was brilliant. It allowed the odd driver/team to have a go at improving things if they went the wrong way in setup for quali. Wish they'd bring that back. Sounds like a good fit for the sprint weekend format. To be clear: I'd prefer sprint f'ed right off, but if we're forced ...

If we _must_ have these sprint races, then I think they need to do something to change things up between the sprint race and the race race. As I was watching today I was (probably yet again) thinking how about the parc ferme only applies to the quali and sprint, allowing the teams to respond on Sund...

Can't the rules just be if you change tyres under the red flag you simply go to the back. Exactly the same as it would be if the SC had stayed out instead. Now you're just making sense, and we all know the FIA can't have that. If they for some reason absolutely want to allow tire changes during red...

Re: Saudi was an exciting/eventful race, but was it a *good* race?
I landed on no, mainly due to the safety aspect. I don't think it was a safe place to race. In addition there was one and a half overtaking spots, which isn't great for such a long track. Spa has several for comparison. It would have been a lot more interesting as a regular circuit with astroturf so...

IIRC Wolff said during an interview with Sky a few races ago they understood the issue, it was related to a batch (of materials IIRC) and that the result was engines degrade faster than expected.
I can think of several plausible ways this could happen, so why would it be BS?

Clearly Brawn has orders to make sprint a thing. So with that basis, what's realistically the least sucky sprint race that might get implemented? As usual my mind starts rambling. Perhaps driver-only points for the sprint race (limit team orders)? Fresh tires is a must I think, but maybe the Q3 driv...

Re: 2021 Italian Grand Prix FP & Qualy/Sprint Thread
Because that would devalue the race itself, something the FIA said they did not want to do. It would also mean some GP weekends are worth considerably more pts than others, which is not really fair to the venues that miss out. For me the race is already devalued. For example, Gasly is now at the ba...

You need to read the rest of my post, but to repeat, if cars pass easier, then the Sprint Quali will allow them all to pass and get into race-pace order, not normal qualifying order which can often be quite different. IMHO to add more action on friday I'd give them several sets of tires they could only use on fridays.

The reason he spun was Leclerk's front end hitting the side of his car, just in front of the rear wheels, shoving Ricciardo's car into a spin.
