Re: Is Hamilton ruining Max’s legacy?

Kovalainen was good enough to beat Fisichella and Trulli as teammates, Kimi and Massa would both later take a hammering from Alonso, Kimi a further hammering from Vettel, Massa got beat by Bottas, all this we know now yet we're still back in 2007/2008 believing that Kimi and Massa were both driving...

Re: Is Hamilton ruining Max’s legacy?

I'm not sure how we've got here but I'd certainly say that being the last WDC for McLaren in an inferior car (which it unquestionably was) adds to Hamilton's legacy. Did the Ferrari really turn out to be that much better than the McLaren, or did Heikki Kovalainen fail to bring sufficient points in ...

Re: Is Hamilton ruining Max’s legacy?

Wouldn't you say that Hamilton had a relative poor season in 2008? Similar to 2007 compared to Ferrari and no teammate competition. It has been speculated that Räikkönen took his foot off the gas after securing his WDC in 2007. As you've already been told Kimi started the 2008 season strongly but t...

Re: Is Hamilton ruining Max’s legacy?

Barrichello did match Schumacher for pace from time to time, something Irvine was never able to do. Massa in 2005 was probably equal to Barrichello in 2004, but the picture was different when he was paired with Bottas later in his career after driving alongside Alonso and his accident in 2009. I wo...

Re: Is Hamilton ruining Max’s legacy?

Barrichello going into 1996, an aged Brundle joined the team for his last season in F1. Barrichollo whitewashed him at the start of the season, something like 8-0. However, interestingly, the second half of 1996 once Brundles was possibly more comortable, he out qualified Rubens 5-3. He also pretty...

Re: Is Hamilton ruining Max’s legacy?

Nobody expected Barrichello to beat Schumacher, but some expected Barrichello to run him close. I don't think the same can be said of Bottas with respect to Hamilton when he joined Mercedes. Barrichello didn't run Schumacher close and Bottas didn't run Hamilton close, If the perception was that Bar...

Re: Is Hamilton ruining Max’s legacy?

Just checked on Wikipedia (it is a very long time ago), Barrichello beat all of his teammates from his debut in 1994 to his switch to Ferrari at the back end of 1999. Now these weren't illustrious teammates to be fair. That does not take away from the impression at the time that Barrichello could a...

Re: Is Hamilton ruining Max’s legacy?

So the same as Hamilton in 2019 and 2020? Verstappen has had a dominant car since Belgium 2022. That's 34 races. Verstappen has won 28 of them. He's failed to win just 6 GPs. Hamilton had a two year run with a dominant car and a teammate he could easily beat. He won 22 races out of 37. He'd already...

Unlike you JN23 I can't be bothered to read back through this whole thread to check if this has already been mentioned but one thing I will say that Hamilton's legacy will continue beyond his time in the seat, not sure I feel the same will ever be said about Verstappen. I agree that Hamilton is the...

You don't have to be British to show a British bias. I am biased to the US although I only have visited the country a few times, it is not by nationality alone. The real difference of course is that many here applaud Hamilton for his clean driving, whilst Hamilton is just being a whole lot more cle...

Re: The Official Carlos Sainz Jr. Thread

I would say Hamilton has lost maybe 0.050-0.150 through age/motivation 0.100-0.150 through rule change to 2022 spec cars (related to age and adaptability) Although slightly past his peak, 2021 was his last season operating very close to his top level. He was very familiar with the car, motivation ex...

Re: The Official Carlos Sainz Jr. Thread

I think it's easy to forget that until the last round of '23 Sainz was on to beat Leclerc but dropped from 4th to 7th or something and behind Charles. I agree with the general thinking that Leclerc can probably post a quicker lap, but over a race, over a season, there isn't much in it. I know a lot...

Whilst it does sound entirely genuine, he is also super switched on, a Red flag means he finishes in the points due to lap count back. A SC was suffice.

Re: How many times (if any) do you think race ban should have occured since Spa 2012?

I don’t think anybody for a single incident, however, Grosjean was an accumulation of 3-4 incidents over the 2012 season. Especially on lap 1. The only thing comparable is Verstappen’s run of incidents and the introduction of the stamp down “Max Verstappen rule” with regards to moving in braking zon...

Re: What is more interesting?

Listing reasons why races were exciting doesn't refute the fact that they were exciting. It does when the discussion is what 'formula' created the worst/boring season. If Monaco is a highlight don't you think that is telling? Even 2023 had a couple of good races, as will 2024. You can even say that...

Monaco was a crashfest, not much more. Its the most boring race of the season, for that to be a highlight of the year is extremely telling of the season. Spa was made interesting by one lap qualifying being wet/dry giving a mixed up grid. Then Schumachers Bridgestones being awful when cold on all t...

To qualify my statements, what makes a good season. 1) 50% - Main priority is a title fight for the WDC. Without this the season is dead in the water. Maximum score if it is between 2-3 drivers across a couple of teams. Bonus marks for a constructors battle but its never interested me really. 2) 30%...

2004 is basically how 2023 would be, if every race was Monaco. An overtake is something out the ordinary. But even then fuel loads would still dictate strategy. Montoya on Schumahcer at Spa was a great move for what 4th place, but to have two classic overtakes in an entire season is awful. The overt...
