Re: Who was the better Mercedes driver in 2022?
I’d say George. He came out of the gates with better form and seemed to handle the problems with the car better than Lewis. Lewis had a few races later in the year where he had better pace, but not massively. When the car had race winning pace, it was George who got the result and convincingly so. I...

Re: The Official Daniel Ricciardo Thread
Vandoorne had everything against him, the Honda engine, Alonso himself being quicker and then being treated as a #2 driver that exaggerated the performance difference. Ricciardo can't drive the car plus I think he struggles with the tyres, Ricciardo has always been a limited driver, not great in th...

<t>It was the first year of the budget cap regulations. It doesn't appear to be deliberate. The overspend was not enormous. They have got both a fine and a sporting penalty.

Penalties should be more harsh in the future as the teams and FIA refine their understanding.

Move on....

Re: Ricciardo vs Ocon 2020 Revisited
That is a comprehensive trouncing by Ricciardo on Ocon. I think many have forgotten just how quick Ricciardo was in the Renault and how close he was to Max in the Red Bull. This battering of Ocon only happened two years ago, so it’s not as if Ricciardo could have declined that quicky as a driver. My...

Re: The Official Daniel Ricciardo Thread
I’m going to come at this from a different angle. Ricciardo took some time to get up to speed at Renault, but when he did he was consistent and was clearly ahead of Hulkenberg and Ocon. His “loss of speed” coincided with his move to McLaren so we can clearly see that the McLaren is a very differentl...

Re: What can be done to eliminate porpoising
Interestingly Mercedes actually say they've resolved their porpoising (as of the Spanish GP), but they also have an issue with "bouncing" which occurs on bumpier tracks. Sounds like they are running a very low ride height to achieve their downforce and the suspension isn't stopping the car bottoming...

Re: Your choice of formula 1 race director for formula 1s 2022 season.
Ok, to clarify - the rule book appears to give the race director discretion over some processes and procedures including the safety car. In no way was I suggesting he/she has the ability to stop a race and change the results. It gives the race director discretion in when to call out and call in the...

Again, this still could mean the virus is quite dangerous, but we have our own empirical information to go on nowadays that allows at least us to relax about it compared to March 2020. All in all, the human condition for tribalism has made a right cockup of what should have been a rational debate, ...

Re: Schumacher's comeback vs. Alonso's comeback
Hard one, the results aren't really conclusive on their own.
Subjectively, I would say it was obvious during Schumacher's time at Mercedes that he wasn't at his best. But with Alonso it's not so clear, he could be a lot closer to his best.

The rule book doesn't give the race director discretion. Please please stop this narrative. It gives him discretion over when yo use the safety car not on disregarding protocol. You're basically saying the RD could decide on the final lap for no reason at all he can decide the car in 20th wins. Tha...

Give him another year, he's a race director that wants to see competitive racing and I believe that's what the drivers and fans want too. I'd be inclined to give it to Masi for another year. I know that will be an unpopular opinion, but I have reasons. I think everyone would agree that this year has been the closest fought between two drivers from different teams for a very long time. It also had many eventful and contentious moments....

Re: Should merc take the case to court
I can't agree that handing the title to the correct winner after the fact is a bigger farce than giving it to the wrong person in the first place. It's a deeply unfortunate situation with no good outcome, but I don't see the answer being to double down on the bad decision just because it happened. ...

Even if you didn't want this to go to court. You must now want it to go to court. Just to see how this plays out. This is even better than the season now. I really don't. Re: Should merc take the case to court
I'd say no. Let's say Mercedes do take it to court and somehow they are successful in their appeal, having the result overturned and crowning Lewis champion well after the fact. That's going to leave an even worse taste in the mouth than what many currently feel about the end of the GP. The question...

Re: Safety cars
My question is - would the racing be too boring without them? If the field spreads out continuously for 50-60 laps that could get boring very quickly. Yes, on a pure level that means it should be down to car speed and safety cars wouldn't affect the result. But given they do bring the field back to...

Re: Things that must be better next year
For me, minor running over the edge of the track shouldn't be punished unless it's obviously being repeated to gain an advantage. Why not, though? If this was Monaco, Mount Panorama, etc. the drivers would stay on track or cause catastrophic damage to their cars and likely be out on the spot. Isn't...

Who really cares what the rules are, so long as you don’t change them in the middle of the contest in such a way as to massively benefit one driver and to massively disadvantage another. What they did is the antithesis of sport. The rules weren't changed. The application of the rules did not affect...

Safety cars do effectively manipulate the race if you consider motor racing on a pure level. However, they are present in virtually all forms of circuit racing and are a necessary evil. All teams are in the same boat and must consider the possibility of safety cars when determining strategy. My ques...

I agree that it needs to be better. It's so complicated and many times it has negatively impacted the racing and the spectating. I don't know how you fix it though. Overall I think a win for Max is good for F1. Mercedes and Hamilton have been dominant for so long. I think Hamilton taking yet another title would have been deflating after such an intense season, a...

You can claim to be taking the impartial high ground here, but if you're going to do that then the race ought to have ended under safety car -- which is something that happens in motor racing. What about good luck?
E.g. Hamilton at Imola running off into the sand trap, but being able to rejoin the lead lap due to the red flag caused by Bottas & Russell colliding.
I believe there were a few similar lucky moments throughout the season.
