Re: The difference Hamilton and Verstappen make

Clearly the two have been the miles above everyone else. Choosing one or the other is like splitting hairs. Whoever wins the WDC, truly deserves it, assuming both finish races. Although, if Max has a DNF and Lewis wins then that would be very harsh for Max as he has been super consistent through th...

Re: An intentional crash to win the title

Maybe the OP should've included the scenario from 2016 as well where Hamilton backed up Rosberg, making him prone to overtakes from cars trailing behind. Was this investigated by the stewards and if not were there any calls for it to be investigated by the stewards, or any serious outcry by anyone ...

Re: An intentional crash to win the title

Exclusion of the current year championship and a next season ban from F1... That would be my preference as well, if the incident is clearly deliberate. But I don't see why it would happen. After Jerez 1997, every driver knows they won't win the title by deliberately crashing out a rival, so there's...

If he wins in SA and finds himself leading AD it would be better for him (strictly from a winning the title point of view) to crash into Verstappen than let him pass. If he lets him pass then he loses. If he causes the crash he might be able to put Verstappen out whilst continuing. Max needs to fin...

Re: Beleriand's Statistical Corner

Looking back through history Formula 1 has provided us with several powerful combinations of good drivers in very good cars. How much is driver and how much is car is always an open question. Here's a few examples: 1) I know many don't consider Damon Hill very good, but when he was put in a William...

Re: The difference Hamilton and Verstappen make

You seem to have left a very. very important detail out of this analysis... You are casting Hamilton in the Prost role here but it was in fact Prost who started the cascade of drivers winning the WDC by crashing out rivals in 1989. Lets hope history doesn't repeat itself ;) Well first he needs to b...

We are comparing with Silverstone but that was a situation were the overtaking car was nearly fully alongside before the entry to the corner before the cars had slowed for the corner and then the overtaking car then tried to bail out, I think it has to be a situation were there is a pure take out, b...

Hamilton and Verstappen are clearly the best drivers in the sport and consistently driving at the ceilings of their car's performance. Ah yes good shout. The Prost vs Senna years were my other thoughts but I don’t know enough about those. Also a different dynamic when both were at the same team initially. I watched the Prost v. Senna years firsthand. IMO, the title fight we have now is a very good match (if not identical) for what...

Re: Qualifying vs Race Pace

I think first you look at the cars, some cars switch the tyres on quicker but then suffer with worse degradation so we would see these as being better qualifying cars than race cars. Then car set up, good front end grip makes a car quicker over one lap as opposed to having understeer but that unders...

The difference between a very good driver and a great driver is very small. The list of recent greats I think is small, but when coupled with a good car are near unstoppable, as we’ve see this season. Senna Schumacher Alonso Hamilton I have not added Vettel or Verstappen (yet) because I feel the ot...

Re: Will the FIA step up. A possible championship permintation.

I guess that what is therefore needed is for Hamilton to be 1 point ahead going into Abu Dhabi. It would therefore still be a winner takes all scenario (or who finishes ahead takes all - as if they end the season on equal points, Max wins) - but there is nothing for Max to gain with a DNF. However,...

I can't see either driver crashing into the other deliberately for all the reasons mentioned. However I can definitely see both drivers taking a "get out of my way or we crash" attitude that results in a collision (again) when neither backs down. In fact I'd say it's highly likely that will happen ...

I honestly don't think it will come down to that, unless Lewis wins in SA. I don't think Max will go to the the extent of deliberately crashing. The most obvious precedent is Schumacher in 1997 for which he was excluded from the standings and that take out was nowhere near as obvious as Senna's take out in 1990, it's hard to imagine a Senna like take out today would pass muster.

I have a hard time believing either driver would deliberately take the other out in order to try and win the title.
