Re: F1 Gossip/Rumour/Inside news Thread
That is okay, Wheatley is not involved in designing the car. Operationally Wheatley is a very clever guy, you think that's not important? Relatively unimportant compared to the design of the car, yes. Also, a function that is easier to replace or recruit. Tell Mercedes that. It has nothing to do wi...

Re: The big 6 then the rest?
The old system use to be:- tier 1 - the best(s) drivers tier 1b - not quite the best but good enough to be world champion if circumstance allowed. tier 2 - strong #2 drivers at top teams tier 3 - midfield drivers deserving of F1 tier 4 - shouldn't be in F1 So going by consensus of Verstappen standin...

Re: 2024 Miami Grand Prix Race Thread
So Norris missed the pit entry as the SC was called and the SC missed Norris (I assume he passed pit exit before the SC did?). The SC then picked up Verstappen and effectively extended Norris' gap prior to him pitting next time around. I assume that the SC, having missed Norris, should have allowed...

Miami F1A races weren't the best.. but then F4 cars on that circuit isn't a recipe for excitement. Looks like Pin is going to have more of a challenge than some predicted. Still only 2 events in. on to Barcelona. I haven't been able to watch Indy NXT this year so don't know how Chadwick is looking....

Re: The big 6 then the rest?
Looking at it again I think you have too many tiers... Looking at the state of play as of now I think I would suggest something like Tier 1 - Verstappen Tier 2 - Norris, Leclerc, Alonso Tier 3 - Sainz, Hamilton, Russell Tier 4 - Perez, Hulkenberg, Ocon, Gasly, Bottas, Tsunoda, Albon, Piastri Tier 5...

Re: The big 6 then the rest?
Now that Norris has made a big psychological breakthrough by finally winning his first race, I think he will gradually establish himself as the second best driver in the sport. I don’t have much evidence that Norris is better than Leclerc but it’s a hunch from the eye test, difficult to prove thoug...

Re: 2024 Miami Grand Prix Race Thread
I just watched it again, Verstappen actually was losing more time than I thought to Norris. On lap 24 he was 9.5 seconds behind. On SC deployment on lap 28, the gap was 11.5 and it gradually grew every sector. He gained 2.0 seconds in 4 laps. Leclerc also gained 1.2 seconds in those 4 laps on Verst...

Re: Where do you want Newey to go?
Isn't he going to be working on a Red Bull project? I can't see him going to any other team. When he left before to work on sailboats he returned to RB, so why not continue the challenge? That's him basically working out his 1 year gardening leave away from the F1 team, if all he wanted to do was r...

Re: F1 Gossip/Rumour/Inside news Thread
Clearly the current drivers cannot extract a great deal of performance from the W15 and they were also struggling with the W14 and the W13. In my view the drivers are unable to drive around some of the unwieldy characteristics of the current generation of Mercedes cars. That leads to a downwards sp...

Apart from the four races that Ferrari won in 2022: Charles finished 0.5 seconds behind Max in Jeddah Charles was leading in Spain by 15 seconds when his car failed The less said about Monaco strategy the better Sainz was quicker than Max in Canada and finished in his DRS Charles was leading by 15 ...

Re: Is Hamilton ruining Max’s legacy?
You’re doing a very good job of deliberately missing the point. You listed a bunch of races which Ferrari “should” have won in 2019 and included Baku which is based on very little evidence apart from Q2 times. Then when I make the same argument for 2022, you turn around and claim that I said Ferrar...

Re: Is Hamilton ruining Max’s legacy?
Remind me what happened in Baku 2022. From my memory, Leclerc took pole, lost the lead early, and retired with a car failure, but because safety car timing would have benefited his strategy some people believe he had an outside chance of winning. I think it's a bold statement that Ferrari should (o...

Funny how Pokerman thinks Ferrari should have won Baku 2019, but when I say the same about Baku 2022, he misinterprets it as Ferrari was quicker than Red Bull in that race. Re: Is Hamilton ruining Max’s legacy?
Even as a Verstappen fan, I was very encouraged by the pace of McLaren and Ferrari at Miami. The upgraded McLaren in the hands of Norris looked like the fastest car, while Ferrari was at most 1-2 tenths slower. Miami is a circuit that tests every quality of a car. Top speed, mechanical grip, brakin...

True, Max had just gotten to the front and looked to be on his way to a victory when he got a piece of carbon stuck in his floor. There was a late SC that bunched up the field, who knows what would have happened. If you want to say Ferrari wasn't as fast as RB at Silverstone (a race that they start...

this race yesterday was a fine reminder that without the car Max cant win just like everyone in f1, and that he does mistakes too. Counterpoint - Had it not been for a dose of bad luck he may well have won the race without having the best car on the day. Which has little to do with Verstappen makin...

I don't think he was far enough ahead. If I recall correctly (but have to rewatch this part for sure) he also just missed the pit entry as the safety car was brought out. That would have put him further down, but it depends of course where the safety car would have picked him up. Norris was 11.316s...
