Re: 2024 Japanese Grand Prix Race Thread
I'm not sure why Hamilton offered to move over. Sure he was slower in stint one which was unlike him but he was much quicker than Russell in the final two stints and lost 10 seconds to the undercut.

Re: 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix Free Practice & Qualifying Thread
Sainz was ill yesterday but still drove in FP1/2. Here you can see how visibly ill he looks but is sweet enough to sign autographs for fans. It always shocks me how elite sportspeople just carry on and push through illness. Is Sainz really that worried he'd be shown up by the reserve driver like St...

Re: Hamilton Vs Teammates
I exclude DNf's so they have no impact. That is not strictly true because Hamilton was almost always ahead when either driver suffered poor reliability or crashed out. So actually you are reducing Hamilton's margin. There was 20 DNFs between the pair and Hamilton was ahead when either of their cars...

Re: Hamilton Vs Teammates
The Hamilton vs Button gap is hurt hugely by the distribution of Hamilton's and Button's DNFs. The theme being that Hamilton was almost always ahead when his car failed and Button was almost always behind Hamilton when his car failed. That said, no teammate had enjoyed the consistent advantage Butto...

The report from the Warren Commission was published in full. That did not stop conspiracy theories and it may well have fuelled them. I agree, the Warren Commission didn't do a good job and was prejudiced by the FBI and the Executive Branch. The conspiracy theories were in response to a transparent...

Re: The 100 Greatest of All Time (Update)
I must say KV has me convinced on the age factor. I always thought that the key was 4 years experience before you are fully developed in F1, but for most drivers their first 4 years is from late teens to early twenties or early twenties to mid twenties - the exact overlap that KV's age hypothesis in...

Re: The top 3 performing drivers of every season
I have to say I'm a little surprised you've given Hamilton the win in 2020. I'm also curious as to your rationale for ranking 2010 as you have. Kubica had a great year but I'm more circumspect to you giving the win to Rosberg. I think Villeneuve has a very strong claim for #3 in 2000, why do you thi...

Re: Winning Streaks in the Lewis Hamilton Era
Oh I agree that overtaking from 2017-2021 was poor, I just don’t see the logic behind including 2015 and 2016 in that category. The cars were significantly smaller and lighter back then. 2015-2016 was peak whoever leads after T1 wins precisely because dirty air had started to make passing much more...

Re: Winning Streaks in the Lewis Hamilton Era
There were more overtakes in 2016 than 2022 despite one fewer race btw. I'd argue Hamilton lost more races to Rosberg and Bottas precisely because of the effect of dirty air. Verstappen blasting through the field and past Perez isn't because he's so much better than Hamilton was in a dominant car (...

Re: Winning Streaks in the Lewis Hamilton Era
I doubt Hamilton would have given up any of his 6 "easy" world titles in exchange for a closer field where he would not win one of those titles if the field was closer. It is easy to say when you are dominating the field and even easier to say when you are no longer dominating the field. Actually, ...

How would you rank Alonso, Norris and Hamilton? I'm still not sure I've got them in the right order  It's no easy question tbh. What is better: P3 in the 3rd best car dominating your teammate, P4 in the 5th best car dominating your teammate or P6 on the 4th best car beating your teammate. By m...

Re: Winning Streaks in the Lewis Hamilton Era
I'm sure if you asked Hamilton if he'd rather race with a closer field and regs that enable easier overtaking versus the era of his actual dominance with a wider field but very hard to overtake, he'd take the 2022 regs any day.

Re: Winning Streaks in the Lewis Hamilton Era
SUMMARY: Hamilton seems to get outperformed by Bottas more often and makes more critical mistakes. The only wins that Mercedes cost Hamilton are maybe Monza and Russia 2022, although Monza he must take a good chunk of blame, and in Russia there’s a high chance he wouldn’t have won anyway. Verstappe...

You don't seem to understand what I mean. By turning into a car alongside of you, even if you are supposed to "have that corner", even if it is not your fault, you lose that potential race win anyway. What good is superior insight, if you're not using it? What you are perhaps overlooking is the pen...

Re: The best season performance from any driver
I think it's sad some fans now see this as a 'normal' option. And in this specific case, risking your own car to risk your only chance of a win this season, seems very unwise to me. Perhaps Charles noted last year how Hamilton failed to retain his only chance of a race win in Brazil. It's not the "...

Re: The best season performance from any driver
Verstappen is simply a freak. I've never seen this level of consistency from a sportsman for quite some time. While he has some decent advantages, in a car that has probably been W10 level of dominance he's just delivered relentlessly. Verstappen has an aura no other driver has: inevitability. Peopl...

Leclerc is a very good driver and I still think out of him, Norris, Russell and Sainz, he is most likely to succeed against Verstappen. When he's on it, he's fire but there is a small question over unforced errors. However, I think it's better to make mistakes when you are blindingly fast rather tha...

Re: 4th in the WDC
Sainz's ability to hoover up points is quite something. Leclerc's probably still been the better performer this year by the same margin he was in 2021 but will now be losing 2-1 in seasons when he arguably hasn't been outperformed in any of them. I still think that of the new generation Leclerc has ...

Wasn't Hamilton's 'disastrous start' largely down to Mercedes playing around with new ideas on a pretty uncompetitive car in early 2022 and Hamilton being the guinea-pig for these in those races? I think this is a little overstated tbh. Hamilton did carry extra sensors (worth a few kilos) in Austra...

Re: The second best car debate
Drivers are always an impairment on the pure car performance. In the USA, I'd say that there was almost nothing between McLaren and Mercedes as I feel Norris was a marginally bigger impairment to his McLaren than Hamilton was to his Mercedes.
