Re: 2020 Season - Driver Ratings

In fairness he did also point out that qualifying was an area he had to work on this season, so that does validate your point somewhat! I think that comment is more short-term and relative to Bottas though, and you could say so far so good for 2020. Wherever you land, for the success he's had, his ...

Re: 2020 Season - Driver Ratings

Hamilton's qualifying pace isn't as metronomic as Verstappen's or Alonso's as far as I can tell. He produces more blips and average performances throughout a season, though in 2020 so far he's been quite metronomic. There are times when Hamilton gets a good whoopin' from his teammate and I remember ...

Re: 2020 Season - Driver Ratings

Bottas in qualifying: 6th Bottas in the race: 9th I think that's a fair assessment. In other words, the rankings are actually just about right... This is a bit off topic but who are the seven you mention? Verstappen, Leclerc, Vettel, Russell, Ricciardo I’m guessing. Beyond that the two McLaren driv...

Re: 2020 Season - Driver Ratings

This is a bit off topic but who are the seven you mention? Verstappen, Leclerc, Vettel, Russell, Ricciardo I’m guessing. Beyond that the two McLaren drivers and Ocon I’m guessing. Pretty sure Bottas would comfortably best Ocon based on form this year. Bottas has been close to Hamilton, but has been...

Re: Official Valtteri Bottas Thread

If Ricciardo never gets even one shot in a serious WDC contender then... man... that would be a sickener.

Bottas is on his fourth chance right now and will get at least five.

Re: Official Valtteri Bottas Thread

I think Verstappen would have won the WDC. I've been consistent in saying Ferrari had the car to win in those years and failed to deliver. As for Leclerc, it depends on how he would have taken to the role of leading the championship. If his frequent errors are the result of overdriving while trying...

Re: 2020 Season - Driver Ratings

I think it has to be the second option; the MotoGP field is simply not as strong as the F1 field. I find that far more likely than the other possibility. Likewise, I agree with your Schumacher analogy -- or earlier, with drivers like Senna or Clark. Those were great drivers, but they wouldn't look ...

Re: 2020 Season - Driver Ratings

I think it's not too hard to make good relative judgments even across teams providing performance between the cars allows for the driver to make the difference. It's when there are huge gaps in performance between cars where it becomes very difficult to say, for example, if Russell's drives over the...

Re: PF1 Forum teammate wars vote: Tuscan GP 2020

I mean the marked difference in performance coincided with updates only put on one car. It's quite logical to assume that the performance difference was directly down to the upgrade until further notice given the trend of previous races. It was supposed to be worth 2-3 tenths per lap. I can't be bot...

Re: Official Valtteri Bottas Thread

I think we need to slow down on Leclerc until he puts a campaign together which isn't littered with incidents in the Ferrari. Verstappen could have won the title in 2018 in the Ferrari, or even in 2017 depending on how Hamilton would have dealt with the pressure of perhaps an even more fearsome chal...

... against Bottas who has had a win and 6 podiums yet the ranking is supposedly weighted to drivers in better cars? You've just nicely demonstrated how having a better car creates a bias in ratings. Bottas' win and podiums are purely a reflection of the car he's in, nothing else. I am 100% confide...

Re: 2020 Season - Driver Ratings

In 2019 Bottas was one of the best drivers as far as I'm concerned, in what was a weak year for driver performance in general. In 2020 I have him middle of the pack. In 2018 he was perhaps lower end of a middle pack, and some argued he was one of the worst drivers on the grid (F1metrics had him 19th...

Hamilton was faster in Q2 and the first run in Q3, he also was faster in the race, the prizes don't get handed out in practice. He was a really minuscule amount faster in both Q2 and Q3, and if that had held true in the race I would have agreed Bottas was robbed by circumstance. But when Hamilton w...

If the new regs end up doing as prescribed, qualifying will become less important and it will open up the possibility of multiple-stop strategies far more often.

Well I'm not sure I rate Ocon as very good, especially on his form this year and his admission that he's still not yet up to full speed, but I've been generally impressed by Ricciardo this season (and quite a few other seasons).

Probably needs Hamilton to get Covid and for him to make a mistake which causes a race ban through penalty points and 1 additional DNF compared to himself — then he can win. Anything can happen in sport, but the chances are exceedingly low. At this stage I'm wondering how many drivers on the grid wo...

Re: Driver(s) of the Day - 2020 Tuscan Grand Prix

I was left frustrated by Ricciardo's defence of Albon, otherwise his drive would have been pretty much perfect had he been a sharper fox with racecraft - if he had held off Albon for 1-2 laps it might have been enough to finish ahead. Still a very good drive. Thinking more carefully about Hamilton's...

So did Ferrari and Leclerc set the car up for qualifying?

As he was eating through the tyres like no other car and their blushes were spared by the last red flag.
Maybe, and hoping that it would be as hard to pass cars here as initially predicted?

I think you cand defent much easier on outside in T1, you can brake much later and use the camber of the corner to stick the car around...
