Re: Foolproof ways of predicting the Champion since 2000
Pole position at the Spainish Grand prix has a large correlation, although Hamilton got that in 2012 I think it is good for nearly all the years since 2000 and all the way back to 1992. So Hamilton was 'on statistic' to win the 2102 WDC until some botched pitstops ruined his chances. I thought he w...

Re: 2016 Chinese Grand Prix Practice Thread
Is it within the rules for Pirelli to reduce tire pressures before FP3? http://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/grosjean-ridiculous-tyre-pressure-limits-making-haas-car-undriveable-687255/ ...and it seems the high tyre pressures are making at least one driver unhappy. According to Grosjean they are 4-5psi...

Re: 'Grid Boost' Idea Solves Entertainment vs Quali Meritocr
Another idea, comes to me by the 'seeding' notion of tennis. Cars are paired against each other in a knock-out qualifying elimination format. Winning car goes on to another round, losing car is set to the bottom of the grid based on the time it set. Start them 1/2 lap offset so no interference. Mayb...

Re: 'Grid Boost' Idea Solves Entertainment vs Quali Meritocr
I think this idea has merit. The goal is to encourage overtaking. Reward it with grid spots after normal qualifying as it is done now. Concerns about retirements creating artificial moves up the grid are easily managed by omitting them unless the car had already been passed in the race. Stewards can...

Re: 'Grid Boost' Idea Solves Entertainment vs Quali Meritocr
So, I guess that 2-legged soccer matches are a bad thing? Most sports have games that influence other games and complex systems. In tennis for example you have seedings based on rankings points, recent results on surfaces and past records at the tournament. In F1 you already have rules that affect f...

Re: Is there anything Haas about the Haas car?
Sorry to be a cynic but the naivety of many on this thread is simply breathtaking F1 has a long and undistinguished history of key players being unsavoury characters, many of whom (e.g. Chapman, Briatore & Mallya) have/had criminal records. Distributing funds evenly across teams would not necessari...

Re: Is there anything Haas about the Haas car?
Haas not only has certain components it must design and have made, it also must decide what to purchase from other suppliers. One does not just willy-nilly buy whatever looks good off the shelf and hope it all fits together in a balanced design that produces excellent outcomes. You have to make care...

Re: Hamilton Points Out What Many Fans Have Been Saying
Unfortunately I feel there are some vested interests at play here. Complex aero that requires a lot of expensive CFD and wind tunnel work to get right favours the bigger teams as they have the resources to spend on it, thus they will always be looking to maintain this format. The last thing the big...

Re: Hamilton Points Out What Many Fans Have Been Saying
The current philosophy appears to be that which Mercedes has actualized over the past several years: Go seriously fast to get Pole. Once in Pole, make sure of the best start and drive off into the sunset. Try to avoid like the dickens ever being behind anyone but your teammate. It's a system designe...

The way Hamilton sought out Rosberg to hug him afterwards tends to support what you say.MarkieM wrote:Superb from Haas.
Of the top 3, I suspect Ham is as happy as Rosberg with that one. Vettel is probably frustrated.
The pace of Mercedes on the medium tyre is a huge advantage.

Re: Official Australian GP Qualifying thread
Are there two HAAS teams? The one I see qualified in 19th and 20th place and were abysmally slow. Yahoo has a front page story about how poor their qualifying went. I'm not sure what HAAS team you are looking at. The lap that Gutierrez finished but that did not count was a 1:26.645. That would have...

Re: US Viewers: Let's Discuss David Hobbs
Okay so I've been watching F1 coverage in the United States for decades and David has been a staple in the broadcast team the entire time. It saddens me to say that it is definitely time for him to hang up his microphone and allow someone else to take over. He used to bring that ex-driver's perspec...

Re: Official Australian GP Qualifying thread
Quali was a bag of penis, lets not mix our words here. I was open and willing to see how it went, and it sucked. Fingers crossed it gets binned quickly and we roll back to the original idea. There's no time to think up new ideas, just roll back. No shame in admitting you were wrong FIA, just come o...

Re: Official Australian GP Qualifying thread
If I understand this correctly, even if you do your math right and leave with 3 min to spare, but you get shuffled down one position while on your out lap you might as well just park it. Right?? ... No. As long as you complete a time before cut off it doesn't matter if your new time is good enough....

Re: Official Australian GP Qualifying thread
Obviously the format didn't go well, which is probably a good thing, because obvious things are more likely to get fixed quickly. However, the biggest surprise was that a half asleep me who had a read of the rules properly for the first time last night before bed seemed to understand the new rules ...

Re: Official Australian GP Qualifying thread
I don't get it. I haven't paid much attention to the new quali rules, but I could tell that drivers who were going out didn't have enough time to set a new lap and avoid elimination. How can these multi-million dollar teams with geniuses working for them not understand this system? :? Because the r...

That black bit at the back looks rubbish. The reason teams are doing this is to hide details so it's more difficult for rivals to copy them. Doesn't bother me one bit. and B'sides… Go Steelers! Hehe Which is completely silly. Use of infrared and other frequency sensitive cameras can show that detai...

Re: Competitiveness of teams over the last 30 years...
I've not been watching F1 for many years, but the issue of competitiveness doesn't need great history in the sport to understand, I don't think. These are the issues that I think ruin the sport's competitiveness and how I see they can be fixed. 1) Money is ruining it, but not because there is just t...

My Name is Paul. I live in Appalachian panhandle of Maryland, USA. I am a relative newbie to Formula 1. Even though my bachelors degree was in mechanical engineering, I tended to ignore motorsports for most of my life because it seemed an excuse to watch people get killed on much too regular a basis...
