Re: Is Brake feel the most important skill?

With the amount of torque these cars have and no traction control I would have thought that traction out of corners is now a more important skill than braking. Just a guess though, the people to ask are the ones racing them, not the people watching them with a bag of tortilla chips and a beer from ...

Re: Is Brake feel the most important skill?

Perhaps I should be clear. I mean brake feel in the sense of what separates the fast driver from the "slow" one. In extracting ultimate pace from the car, won't the driver need to be able to slow it down with as little time loss as possible?

We're assuming the cars are equal of course.

Is Brake feel the most important skill?

In racing. Particularly in F1. With how fast the cars are everywhere, the punishment of g-forces, is good braking feel the most important skill for a driver to unlock ultimate pace? I notice that many of the drivers in quali laps position their brake balance from corner to corner. And since a good l...

Yes, in a limited way, in the following areas: - I started to think many steps ahead before doing any move - It raised awareness of the proximity of other cars and possible dangers of contact - My reactions are faster - I tend to understand my (me and my cars) limits better, increasing confidence i...

Re: Has watching F1 made you a smarter driver?

In Scandinavia it's obligatory to do one day of skidpan driving to get your license . That was enough for me to instinctively know what to do with a car that loses grip ever since, but it's different for RWD/FWD/AWD, obviously. I learnt to drive in a Volvo 740 and gave myself slides in the winter o...

Re: Has watching F1 made you a smarter driver?

I would say that "Car feel" was introduced to me earlier as a concept while watching F1.

I would have eventually got there of course-with more driving experience-but the understanding that the car itself was a living thing I got from watching F1 and the drivers speak about it, specifically.

Has watching F1 made you a smarter driver?

Simple question. Has watching F1, which is considered by millions as the pinnacle of all motorsport, made you a smarter everyday driver? By knowing apexes and racing lines more intricately than most, are you able to extract more performance from your car than regular people? It has, for me. Once I r...

Re: Multiple World Champions after 152 starts!

What does it matter that Lewis began his career in a top car if he has proven himself in subsequent years to be just as good a driver, if not better than anyone else on the grid? Did starting in a topline McLaren somehow give him an inherent driving advantage that the other greats didn't have? Rubbi...

So many easy explanations but I believe something sinister was afoot. Think about it; the team has held the better part of a second advantage over the field in Quali trim for just about two years and now suddenly, 1.5s of in Singapore ? Read and watch the drivers explain it. They had no clue. The TP...

I thought it was a great interview. It's not often you get to see 2 drivers from different teams sitting down to be interviewed such a formal way. It's good to see the drivers in a more personal and less formal way and definitely makes the drivers a more focal point if we 'get to know them' more in...

Re: Multiple World Champions after 152 starts!

Hamilton got the 2007 McLaren seat because he showed exceptional talent coming up. It wasn't 'gifted' to him as some would have you believe. Another thing, if I remember correctly he was up against De La Rosa and Paffet for the McLaren seat at the time. No contest really. On the way he pummelled Ve...

Hamilton is seemingly always penalized by some in F1 fan circles as a driver lucky to have had good machinery from the start...but have these people considered that perhaps its something he brings to a team that makes the car better? I drive a Volkswagen CC Sport. It's a turbo car and yes, I pretend that the engine driving it is a 1.6L V6. I do try to spot my apexes; I drive with fuel consumption in mind (I'm quite an excellent trail braker) and I love my car. F1 didn't influence my decision to buy. Though had there been a McLar...

I believe Vettel won with a four stop with the soft/medium combo. Pirelli hit the balance right in mid- to late 2011...there really was no need to soften their construction to the extreme point they had now.

Lewis is not fully used to the car. I think the relatively softer front that the Mercedes has would take some getting used to. The McLaren was stiff and had very good front "bite"....watching his onboards you could tell that he did not need to put much steering input in. I also think the McLaren's b...

The tyres are pathetic. Watching the onboards makes one think the drivers are all behind the safety car. These guys are not even 70 percent pushing. Pirelli hit the balance right in 2011 I think..they've gone way too marginal this season

I'd say the majority of his radio messages play out as him sounded ragged and on the edge. A true ice man on the radio is Webber and now, Lewis. I like Domenicalli and Martin more than him...but he does appear to be a formidable leader. He's sort of a smiling assassin type. Acutely aware of RB's success at the moment, yet not willing to flaunt it...(although will do so if it suits him and the team).

He's a good strategist also.

Deitrich favours racing. I say he listens to Marko's remonstrations for a "suitable number 2" and shakes his head....demanding the next young gun. He did not make his fortune by sticking to staid concepts.

I see them going for one of their more promising junior guys.

Raikkonen has the most fanatical fans in the sport. Any suggestion of imperfection about their driver sends them all scurrying to his defense. It's quite startling.
