By the very nature of being in Red Bull or McLaren, one's chances of a podum increase dramatically. Though, of course, anything can happen!
I voted Ricciardo mostly for the RBR, but would've voted Hulkenberg if all things were equal.

Re: Physical modelling question regarding mass
Yes, exactly. For readability, it's best to use descriptive variables:
Wbar * d1 = Wweight * d2
Wbar = Wweight * d2 / d1
Mbar = Mweight * d2 / d1
Wbar * d1 = Wweight * d2
Wbar = Wweight * d2 / d1
Mbar = Mweight * d2 / d1

Re: Physical modelling question regarding mass
It's been a while so correct me if I'm wrong: For a uniform object, the center of mass will be its geometric center. The formula you're remembering is torque = force * distance and for an object to be balanced on a fulcrum, all the torques must balance each other. Example: a uniform density bar that...

What makes a team principal a good team principal? - manages drivers; prevent in-fighting and is the ultimate authority figure - works with engineers to set race strategy - understands all FIA sporting rules and directs the drivers if anything comes up during a race - makes good tough decisions like...

Cost to manufacture a front-wing: $120k+ Cost to "manufacture" a front-wing in a race simulator: cost of electricity to power the simulator This is why running in a race simulator is cheaper than real-world testing. I really, really don't get into the "it is easier on planes" bit. How do you make the jump from missing the first preseason test to questioning the teams viability? It's not like they are the first team to do this. Red Bull missed the first preseason test in 2010 and I'm sure you don't need to be reminded which team has won since then. It's not really a jump. Maj...

Lotus to skip the first test. One has to wonder if this team will make it to the grid next year. Financially they seem in a very bad place and many seem to think that they were always going to miss the first test like they missed the pirelli test in Dec. How do you make the jump from missing the fi...

Re: Do drivers from a lower rank like gp2 get paid?
In the lower tiers, drivers pay to race, unless they are sponsored by a larger company (i.e. a young driver's program). They may be paid, but more likely they will only have their expenses taken care of. Racing has always been an expensive endeavor, and even the top levels of motorsport usually have...

He is absolutely correct. F1 is an expensive endeavor and if a driver can use his or her stardom to attract sponsorship opportunities, it is in the driver and the team's best interest that this is pursued. It should not be a requirement of F1 to "pay to drive", but a driver must absolutely try to h...

Yes, the gap will probably be smaller next year since there will be a smaller difference in weight between when the car is the heaviest and when the car is the lightest.

As has been said the cars are going to be the same, minimum weight unless Seb were a child and Mark morbidly obese. The advantage Vettel had was that he had more ballast to play with, so when the front end was a little sluggish he could move 10kg to the rear while Mark didn't have that available. A...

In a few words: Interlagos is NOT a Tilke track. Yet Austin is, and by most peoples' reckoning Austin is a very good track! In fairness, he hasn't had much real running since the weekend was all wet. He also seemed to struggle on the tires which makes sense given how temperamental they are and his limited running on them. Is this a mistake? While Hulkenberg managed to outscore both Di Resta and Sutil, I would say Force India missed out on a lot more points scoring opportunities this year than Sauber. I would guess Williams. After Raikkonen was signed by Ferrari, Massa and his sponsorship probably proved too tempting. Bottas cost Williams $24,000 last week with his 8th place finish. Unfortunately for Williams it is impossible for them to move up the constructors standing to receive more prize money.
