Re: Ferrari Engine Upgrades
I haven't read the entire thread so sorry if it's come up already, but I have a question regarding engine updates and tokens. Are the teams free to build as many engines they wish with all kinds of different specs and modifications, and they use tokens only if they end up taking one of such engines...

Re: Ferrari Engine Upgrades
...the PU's have to be homologated to race. If we take, Renault, Mercedes and Ferrari, they would have had to homologate the PU's they used at the start of 2015 , as they are a different (because of tokens) specification to the PU's used in 2014, and as such would not be homologated. Re: BERNIE: We must stop asking opinions...
Bernie's right, the strategy group is useless. You can't have teams decide what rules they want in the sport. The teams will not make any decision that could hurt themselves. That's why the only stuff they do is crap like standing restarts and the no helmet change rule. The FIA should set the rules...

Re: Ferrari Engine Upgrades
I think this is the difference in understanding: In a note that was sent from the FIA's Charlie Whiting to all teams over the Christmas period, it was made clear that the upgrades would be allowed to come on tap at any point over 2015. "As it is not specifically stated... when a power unit may be m...

Re: Ferrari Engine Upgrades
I've spent about 20 minutes trying to understand this, including googling the meaning of word homologation. I would quote the relevant regulations again for better clarity. Only power units which have been homologated by the FIA in accordance with Appendix 4 may be used at an Event during the 2014-...

Re: Ferrari Engine Upgrades
I'm sure I read differently. New PUs have to be made immediately available to all, but they don't have to use it until they want to break open a fresh engine. And i know I read somewhere that Arrivabene said they would rotate some of the previous PUs they have used already this year to later races,...

Re: Ferrari Engine Upgrades
Okay, so in your scenario, the engine they use in Spain is spec 1, whilst the engine they use in Canada is spec 2? Once they change to spec 2, all spec 1 engines will be invalid. As spec 1 would no longer be homologated. I'm not sure if there's a rule preventing a team rehomologating PU spec 1 and ...

I really do wonder where that "only one spec at a time is allowed" comes from... Even last year they were allowed to swap back and forth between power unit components, although they had been introducing new parts for reliability reasons... So virtually there were different engine specs run any time...

no, I don't think that's right. That would mean that any customers could be forced into penalties for new engines even if they had been very careful with them. Let's say Williams used a new engine in Monaco and then Merc introduced an upgraded one in Canada - they'd be forced into discarding a virt...

They used 2 tokens. I've heard speculation that it's to do with the ERS side of the engine but I'm not sure.
Performance gains in terms of lap times are hard to quantify. Peak BHP alone isn't a deciding performance factor, drive-ability also matters alot more.

Re: Dual exhausts in 2016?
I'm not totally opposed to it as a "gimmick" because plenty of rules in F1 don't make the cars faster, including some that exist for aesthetic reasons (see stepped noses) It does reek of papering over the cracks though, when they need to look at the more fundamental problem of these engines. I can ...

Giving it to Qatar what probably the dumbest thing they could have done. They may as well said we're corrupt, come and investigate us.
Had it not gone to Qatar they probably would've been able to keep it quiet.

No, they wouldn't ask Nico to move over. He shouldn't have to suffer from the team's mistakes
If they did ask, Nico wouldn't do it. And rightly so.

Re: Dual exhausts in 2016?
This option is simple and not a gimmick. They are simply dumping the wastegate into it's own exhaust, rather than routing the wastegate into the exhaust as it is done now, and on road cars. Road car owners with a turbo car can choose to vent the wastegate to open air. Anyone who has driven a car wi...

Alonso may secretly hate his decision. I have no idea. But I do know how I would feel if I was Alonso. 1. A bit worried that Ferrari has indeed solved a big piece of the puzzle. 2. Majorly disappointed with the McLaren-Honda in its current form. 3. Grateful for the opportunity to help a team everyo...

I think the Alonso vs Button comparison right now is nonsense. We need more trouble-free races from both to start comparing something. Its pointless to compare them in this Monaco race where one driver had mechanical issues in both qualy and race... I mean cmon...lol Trouble is we haven't really ha...

Covalent, as always, is having a dig at Alo (again), nothing to be taken too seriously. Alo reduced the gap to But just before his pitstop, then his car had broken and it is pointless to discuss whether the gap increased again due to BUT's great pace or ALO's unability to match the Brit. There's no...

There was no point in qualifying or race - regardless of tyre compounds (I see you're ignoring the second stint where Alonso was slower despite the faster tyre) - where Alonso was faster than Button, in fact the exact opposite. You can try to spin that however you choose. you both can spin it all y...

6s on the faster tyre is outracing. Well, ... ;) Perhaps, you have a point regarding the gap after the pits stops (though you have to add the penalty ;) ), if the additional 4 s. (i) did not result from traffic or (ii) were not caused by the emerging gearbox troubles. Honestly, I do not think one c...

Re: When will McLaren get on the scoreboard?
I believe that doing well in Monaco at least shows drivability is good. Their fuel consumption is shocking though, which is some ways is good news. They are using more fuel so have to carry around more fuel (bad for lap time, bad for tires), which means just by closing the gap on fuel consumption, ...

In answer to your bottom question, I'd rather have the points. It's all good saying I was better on weekend X, but if you don't have the points to show for it, it doesn't matter a bit. As for the pole. I'd rather be Nico. Like I said above, at the end of the day it all comes down to points, and he g...

A win is a win, that's all there is to it. Yes Hamilton got robbed by his own team, but that's Hamilton's problem, not Nico's. This is why we love F1. For all the technical details and clever engineering, it all comes crashing down to good old fashioned human error.
