Re: Today is a sad day for the history of F1...

I think you may have missed the point, 30 years ago they were used to make large engines even more powerful, next year they are being used to make small engines more powerful. It's not the turbo that's important, its the size of the engine. Ehh? Thirty years ago in F1 the turbo-charged engines were...

Anyone else getting the feeling that Flyboy is getting a little chuckle out of how many times he can ask the same question and get the same answer (relative). I'm actually chuckling more at the number of different answers I'm getting to the same question. Who'd have thought so many people with an i...

Re: McLaren-Lamborghini in 1993... why didn't they do it?

Lamborghini was owned at the time by GM, who didn't want to invest in the engine. McLaren had a customer deal with Ford for '93, however the Lambo V12 was evaluated as an alternative for '93 in the absence of anything else, and if it had looked a better bet than the Ford early in the season it migh...

Deja vu all over again! Fundamentally, this is the same principle as the Hydrolastic suspension system that my first ever car (an 850 cc Mini) had back in 1969 (or the earlier, more complex hydro-pneumatic system developed by Citroen). BMC's Hydrolastic was never used in F1 but it was tried in Indy ...

I think BlackBerry's sponsorship of Mercedes is their first foray into F! - certainly don't recall them sponsoring McLaren previously. Perhaps you're thinking of Siemens or SAP, who did sponsor McLaren in a small way some time ago:

Even if Group Lotus were to be liquidated it wouldn't affect the Lotus F1 team, which is neither owned nor sponsored by Group Lotus. The only connection between the two companies is the name.

I'm surprised this one hasn't already been posted - James Hunt testing a Williams in 1990, when he was thinking about making a comeback. The test was enough to convince him to stay in retirement.

Another Graham Hill extra-curricular drive. This time helping out Matra by doing a day's testing in an MS120 at Jarama in 1972 because regular driver Chris Amon was ill.

Re: Formula One and the Indianapolis 500

The period when full-time F1 drivers also raced in the Indy 500 was actually quite brief - just a decade from Jack Brabham's pioneering drive in the Cooper T54 in 1961 to 1971 when Denny Hulme and Jack Brabham flew the flag for active F1 racers for the final time. Even between 1950 and 1960, when th...

I think it's a relic of the old era, where as others have said you could combine the two. The closest you'll see these days is when someone wins the Indy 500 and then transfers across to F1, which is pretty rare in itself, only Villeneuve has done it in recent years from when I remember (ironic con...

So much for the "Scorpion Racing" fairy story! For this year yes, but if it it isn't vapor and they are trying to make it onto the grid next year last years chassis wouldn't be much use to them.
