Re: How much each venue pays to host a Grand Prix

A quick, sort of related question. especially for the older members. In the 'old' days (and I'm talking 50's through 70's here), would I be correct in thinking that when the Grand Prix circus came to town it was the big pay day for the circuits when they topped up the coffers as opposed to the curre...

I have a book with a picture of a four abreast line up. Bed time now but I'll dig it out tomorrow and scan it.

It must be pretty current. In the interview it says Villeneuve is 44 and according to Wikipedia, his birthdate is April 9, 1971, therefore the interview must have been done after April 9th this year.

I don't like it but Australians have a long and proud tradition of voting people into office and then complaining about them :-)

Re: F1 hot laps on Top Gear

Will Smith blew the first gear change and then overbraked a corner or two later. Probably more than a tenth just there. And women don't need to be stronger to drive faster. Nobody applies anything near their maximum strength to driving a car. In Fangio's early fifties F1 cars maybe, but not now.

Re: 1926 Miller 91

It appears Porsan has a point. The racing reference info page of the race shows the winners average speed of 95.9 mph with the pole speed of 111.7 mph. http://racing-reference.info/race/1926-01/X (hope that link worked. My first time :) ) 111 mph is 179 km/h so that would explain a bit. Still a scar...

Re: Vettel-Webber vs Hakkinen-Coulthard

I have a series of comments and thoughts. I'll try not to deliver a rambling monologue, but no promises. My impression when Webber and Coulthard were together in early red bull days was that Webber looked the better performer although Coulthard actually won the points battle by virtue of a couple of...

Have a read of this: http://www1.skysports.com/f1/news/22058/9041937/how-should-formula-1-remember-the-retiring-mark-webber Excellent article that sums up my perception of Webber beautifully. In hindsight I think 2010 was his only genuine chance to win the championship and sadly he blew it. From th...

Re: The F1 Q&A Thread

I've always had an issue with the blown diffuser because you are using the engine as a compressor to create airflow and enhance aero. It's not really that big a step from the Brabham 'Fan Car' of 1978. It could make an interesting argument as to whether the engine being used for downforce constitute...

Re: Will RBR get behind Webber for Sunday?

I would love to see Webber win the race but I don't expect anyone to 'gift' it to him (or for him to want to win that way) and I think it is unlikely that he will be able to stay in front of Vettel in a straight contest. Vettel is an exceptional driver who is able to get the very best out of a brill...

Re: Which drivers would beat Vettel as a teammate in Redbull

Vettel's advantage over Webber increases as the exhaust aided downforce increases so to answer a question with a question, "Which other drivers perform well in a car with a firmly planted rear end?" A driver who likes a sharp front end and does not mind a bit of twitch at the back is probably not go...

Re: Marko hits back at Vettel critics - PF1

I have to agree with most of what is written here. I'm not a fan of Vettel, mostly because of some perceived attitude/personality issues, including the finger, however I admire his ability and while I would love to see Webber do better I believe Vettel is winning fair and square. (With the caveat th...

Re: Aero Rules - How would you change/improve them?

I would like to see the use of exhaust gases banned from use in aero. The exhaust gases should be released out a horizontal pipe/s behind the rear wings. The only aero effect available should be what is generated by the vehicle's passage through the air. If one wanted to play a little game, I think ...

I'm a bit concerned that Sir Jack Brabham has apparently had his Knighthood stripped from him, while Sir Jackie and Sir Stirling have retained theirs. Is Brabhams not an honorary one like Geldofs? I hope your tongue in cheek disclaimer was in play here but, Yes; Sir Jack's Knighthood is a real one ...

Adelaide in '85 was my first. As others have said,in Australia with two channels the only racing we saw was the local tin tops with a once a year Bathurst weekend as the highlight. I knew a bit about Brabham before this and then Jones made the newspapers in 1980 but until the circus came to Adelaide...

Re: Do you think Gilles Villeneuve is a top 20 F1 driver?

Maybe at the bottom end of the top 20 but I definitely would not put him in the top ten. My top ten list was compiled based firstly on results and none of my ten have less than 2 WDCs to their name. In my opinion the upper echelon must be those who actually achieved, not the shoulda, woulda, coulda ...

Good and interesting discussion folks. Some excellent points raised. It is not possible to make an all time greatest list that will satisfy everyone and although I raised this topic about Brabham, I'm sure there are other drivers who are in a similar boat. I suspect that another reason Brabham was p...

I'm not trying to start another round of the ashes but this question has caused me some concern for a while. I will try not to make it a massive essay but no promises.
