Re: Sprint Qualifying - first impressions?

I enjoyed it once I realised it was effectively a single race spread over 2 days with qualifying having the same relevance as usual, just moved to Friday. The effective benefits being that the first part of the race isn't on race fuel or interrupted by early pitstops, cars can rejoin last if they g...

Re: Sprint Qualifying - first impressions?

I have switched from against to 'ehhhhhhh' - but the closest is to say 'in favour' I'm in favour because it's clear they are going to change the format, and this doesn't really change the format at all. It's just a 400km race with a red flag after the first 100km. People can start bleating on about...

Leclerc, Hamilton and Norris. For the people choosing Alonso what exactly did he do? 7th probably in a car that probably didn't warrant that finish. Very good first lap recovery after a fairly poor getaway. Was fast and defended immaculately (hard but very fair) for long periods from cars with DRS....

Psychological breakthrough in coming to terms with the concept: Qualifying still means exactly the same as before. The sprint is basically just 17 extra laps added to the race, then a scheduled red flag before a (now)normal race order standing restart. ...Albeit with a 20+ hour stoppage after the re...

I don't buy the debris on track explanation. TV coverage of Stroll's car on the flatbed showed that the sidewall had separated at least 40% of the way round the tire at/near tread line. I can't see how such comprehensive damage can be caused by debris not visible on TV. Driver's don't win races by ...

Re: How to solve a problem like Monaco...

The issue with altering Monaco is speed. If you extended any straight and top speed increased by another 20 or 30 mph, the lack of run-off would make it completely unsafe. You'd still have some of Avenue JFK left as a run off similar to Nouvelle now and cars are already reaching 290kph before the c...

After a race with very little on track action and much faster cars unable to overtake, inevitably the question of whether Monaco deserves to be a place where modern F1 cars race. Re: 2021 Portugal Grand Prix Race Thread

It would be fairer to have a cut off for fastest laps, something like laps remaining or from last pit stop.
At the moment it rewards cars that are slowest of the group of cars they are competing with and happen to have a decent gap to the rest.

Re: Should F1 use Indycar qualifying timing lines?

A similar approach could just be to do a sector 3 - 1 - 2 qualifying lap, which would fit with the current F1 terminology. I prefer this idea. Still a effectively a full timed lap but only requiring 2 circuits in total: A 2 sector warm up after pit exit that would usually be pretty brisk anyway and...

Without high downforce and grip F1 isn't really F1. It should be fairly close to the optimum engineering solution for going fast around a circuit as it is meant to be the fastest racing formula. If you want low grip and slower cars there are plenty of other series to go for. Changes to keep things i...
