Today they building the transmission on a metal case that fits like a cartridge inside a carbon fiber shell that provides all the car specific hard points. The common transmission makes a lot of sense as it could still allow the teams to design around it as they desire.

Re: Would making the teams start with full fuel ensure they
They wouldn't have to push hard to burn off the excess fuel. They would have a fuel wasting fuel strategy in the ECU. Anytime the driver is requesting less than full power the consumption is below the 110#/hr limit therefore there is an opportunity to waste fuel. They wold keep fueling the engine on...

Re: Is this the end of the podium ceremony on TV???
Changes are not all good or bad. Traditions are not all good or bad. The podium interviews have devolved into the same old speeches: "Before I answer that let me pause to tell the fans here in {insert Country/CityName} you are the best and I could not have done it without my {insert TeamName} crew."...

Re: Shouldn't F1 cars have rear camera and sensors?
Cameras serve a purpose in mixed class endurance racing where faster cars tend to surprise relatively slower cars. That is not what is happening in F1. Those video systems are also supplemental to the side mirrors, not replacing. A driver needs a side mirror near his line of sight as he looks toward...

I believe if this had been an indecent between teams instead of teammates the stewards would have ruled VER at fault. Because it was Redbull against Redbull they took a pass with a neutral ruling and let the team deal with them. As far as the Redbull response, it seems to be clear VER has the contra...

My point is - I don't get which part of Vettel's stint was the impressive bit, if he done the 39 laps and only had a 1 or 1.2 second lap drop off over that distance then I would say yes that is good driving and he has done well to maintain pace whilst increasing stint length but what he did was inc...

Re: Question on Aero and why cars are 'smooth'
Correlation does not imply causation. With a golf ball the air is moving fast. With a smooth ball air quickly detaches as it rounds the ball. Once detached there is negative pressure in the turbulent tail of air behind the ball. That negative pressure is pulling against the back of the ball, slowing...

Re: Inlcuding engine modes in parc ferme conditions?
Qualifying modes are part of racing and should stay but I would consider limiting the number of modes a car can have available during a race. Instead of dozens say they only had four modes to choose from, go-fast, regular-race and conserve-fuel, cool-hot-engine. Engineers would then have a little le...

If Haas was to beat Ferrari the paddock would have a tizzy over the Ferrari looking too much like the Haas and conclude that Ferrari colluded to take Haas intellectual property. They would then try to ban Ferrari from poaching the Haas aerodynamicists and engineers.

Yes the MP4/4 is simple, elegant and classic. But we have to accept that if we gave the 1988 rulebook to Adrian Newey and asked him today to design a car for that era the car would look very odd in comparison and it would destroy the MP4/4 on the racetrack. Technology moves on. Celebrate the past wi...
