Without looking, I recall the last couple of Canadian GPs being right stinkers in terms of overtaking.
Max and Bottas will rue starting so far down.

Re: 2019 Chinese Grand Prix Race Thread
Whoever was in charge of the broadcast today must have been suffering through a serious hangover from last night. So many bad shots were cut to: cameras moving around, odd zooming into cars at the final corner, some shots being held seconds longer than they should have been. Woeful!

Surprises of the session seem to be Red Bull (who would have guessed Verstappen to be so close to the top?) and Renault (who would have guessed Ricciardo to be so far behind?).
I suspect (read: hope) Renault were performing heavy runs for much of the session, though.

The system makes no competitive sense, though it does serve to incentivise big players sticking in the game when they might otherwise. see other series as better value-for-money. I took nothing from testing that suggested Honda had made major steps. It looks like it will be close behind the top two, but I think Red Bull will be around (if not just behind) Renault and McLaren - at least at the beginning of the season.

Re: New AI graphics coming to F1
That "overtake probability" bit looks a bit stupid to me. How is that calculated? And how is that going to improve the show? Also I fear it'd backfire at a lot of tracks where the probability of an overtake would realistically rarely rise above 10%. What I'd like to see is a "ghost car" in qualifyin...

I also mentioned the Ricciardo and Verstappen thing this weekend. That does seem to be a similar case. But I do think Verstappen did do better during the race. In Abu Dhabi? I'd like to see the numbers to back that up. Ricciardo lead Max when Verstappen pit, but came out 8s behind. Max finished the...

Re: How to defend against a divebomb?
It depends. A well-timed one is pretty hard to defend against, as is any good overtaking move. If it's a case of a driver flying up the inside and missing his/her braking point, then hanging onto the racing line and being ready to swoop back by when they go too deep is pretty traditional. Really it'...

The pit lane change is an interesting one. Should make it a little easier to get started for pit-lane starting cars. I'm curious as to how this will work, though. If memory serves me correctly Mexico was an absolute stinker last year with very little overtaking. Whoever leads out of T1 has a very good chance at bringing it home.
