Re: Eddie Irvine's scathing assesment of Formula One today
I completely disagree with him. You see in many sports over the last 20 odd years when there is a point that it really becomes professional, and I do not mean pain, I mean in attitude. Shuie and Sena were that step above the other drivers at the time, mostly down to being more professional more ruth...

Re: Who will improve the most in 2019: Red Bull or McLaren?
Difficult to put a fair value on improvement when a .5 jump for Mclaren will move them up a considerable step and a .5 gain for RBR will probably make little difference to the finishing position at the end of the year. I expect Mclaren to finish higher up the table than they did this year, but doubt...

Re: FIA hints at grid penalty alternatives
The idea seems to have slipped from the original intent of preventing the use of more that the allocated number of units, to punishing those that do use them, and spoiling the race through it. The ideal would dissuade teams from running the engine at a level that would give more performance at the e...

You mention sound. I wish they would stop 'adding sound' as it is so annoying. 'Woof' when a car passes a camera is the worst of all, and speaking of which, the camera work and direction is dire.

What was said before and by whom? Afaik McLaren or Alonso never approached Honda about 2019, Chevy were McLaren's preferred choice. Honda themselves said they'd be happy to work with Alonso and he had unnamed offers to ride with other teams in Indy which may well have included Honda powered teams f...

I have 'attended' several, but relly cannot put a reliable figure on it as we used to race a minor series and just happened to be at the same venue sometimes in the 'early years'. What I can say is that in latter (to me, before most were born :uhoh: ) each race I have been to I have taken far more f...

Re: If you could own one F1 car, which one would it be?
It would depend on what I intended to do with it. I love the scream from the V12 or 16, but there are not many of them about. Where could I replace a Vanwall? It would probably end up as a DFV engine I could race a couple of times a year and not have to loose sleep over keeping it going. Probably an...

They have to design their own chassis and aero. Brakes are bought from a supplier: no F1 team designs their own brakes. As far as input, who really knows. But officially, no RBR intellectual property is shared with Toro Rosso to the best of my knowledge. Haas is a good demonstration of the legal li...

Re: What if Hamilton stayed with Mclaren?
So much we can never know. I think a key point would be how would Mercedes react. Had Hamilton won the championship, and looked capable of doing it the following year, would Mercedes have backed Mclaren over their own team and never developed into what they became? Had Mclaren continued as the foref...

Probably depends on why or why not you set that time. If you have the best car, you are probably going to set the best time even when you are just going about your usual business. If you have a mid field car, you are not going to go for a time as your energies could be better spent elsewhere. Best c...

There is a 'list' of components that can be bought in, one that can come 'off the shelf' and one that has to be made in house. They are under 'listed parts' in the FIA regs, which are here - https://www.fia.com/file/54256/download/18381?token=lMCfyJzf It more or less says you can only get some parts...

All storming in the the first (real) corner with cold brakes.
If I was one of the first two cars I think I would deliberately over cook it and run wide if needed just not to get stuffed in the rear end. Easier to regather than have to pit or retire.

I think that to attract the big names to LeMans seriously they would need to restructure it into a whole season with good media coverage, in the F1 mold. They said so. It means the throttle had to be down when cornering which is contrary to instinct. More throttle = more flow = more downforce, slight lift, loss of downforce mid bend.

I have always had the impression that if Vettel is out in front driving his own race, he is way up there. Its when he has to interact and actually race he seems to lose out. How much of a win is dictated by team tactics? I do not watch much of it but when I do it seems groups of cars work together. If Alonso is in a single car, is he at a huge disadvantage? About the only team tactic practiced in IndyCar is "do not crash into a teammate". Maybe for the last race of the...

We will disagree there, but thats as it is. Ocon though is bordering on not being a young driver, he is 23 during next season and there are 18 year old's looking for a seat, should he retire out of their way or keep them hanging about 5 years?

I see the important detail as being the definition of 'test'. Is Alonso testing the car? is the team testing Alonso? Is he just having a go to see if he likes it?
