Re: Is Motion possible without Friction?

Great read, thanks. It's admittedly been close to 30 years since I studied physics (at Imperial College fwiw) and haven't worked in the field since. My interest (and subsequent approach) is more philosophical these days, as you may have noticed, and I have found this discussion both educational and...

Re: Is Motion possible without Friction?

Edit: just occurred to me now, rehashing the 'sail argument'. High pressure, low pressure etc, right? Okay, we all know the temperature rises (linear) as the pressure increases. But why, if not because of more molecules being packed into the same volume, thereby colliding with one another more freq...

Re: Is Motion possible without Friction?

Sure, level A physics assume zero friction and a vacuum. Only not to complicate matters, but the example you provided should be sufficient. If a ball bounces off a surface, we like to consider this collision without any 'loss' of energy. However, is it not the simplest truth to acknowledge without ...

Hi Nakojo, Let me try to expand on my points in response to yours. Hope it clears things up. Sorry I read your initial post again and I don't see where you have addressed gravitational pull? At any rate, I believe your other explanations are wrong as well. I'm addressing your points in line below. I...

Sorry I read your initial post again and I don't see where you have addressed gravitational pull? At any rate, I believe your other explanations are wrong as well. Re: Is Motion possible without Friction?

Ah, wings don't bend? Again, there is no accelaration without friction. None. Sorry but this is incorrect. Just taking the solar system as an example, since we can consider space to have zero friction since it's a vacuum: the planets orbit the sun, orbital motion requires objects to be constantly a...

Re: Does watching motorsport make you a better driver?

I think there's a couple different arguments at play here. 1. Watching motorsports makes you a better driver on the road. I would argue no. I think that motorsports fans may be in general better drivers than none motorsports fans (on the road), but only because we are interested in cars and driving ...

Re: Is Motion possible without Friction?

Actually, friction is quite well understood... A hook and eye does not work by friction. Interference fits would not work. Stickle-bricks don't work by friction (although I would suggest friction has a small part to play in keeping the blocks together so they don't just slide apart in the direction...

Re: Physics/Maths of F1 acceleration and speeds

Because Torque and Power are related.

(Power = Torque x Engine RPM x unit conversion factor).

So once you get past 8000 RPM on that graph, the torque decreases faster than the RPM rises (to put it in simple terms) therefore the power decreases.

Re: Is Motion possible without Friction?

I didn't intend this to go the 'rocket' way, but never mind. :] I've had a chance to read up some material. It's pretty intriguing and brought me to another question. Is friction the only source of adhesion? In an absolute friction-less scenario, there would ideally be no adhesion either. Or will t...

Hello.

I don't understand what you mean by aerospike.

You could indeed direct the exhaust forwards, but it wouldn't be of any benefit to the airflow.

I would guess so! But really in the case of the human body I think it would make so little difference as the rest of us is so unaerodynamic that you wouldn't notice any change from having it to not :)

Re: Question on Aero and why cars are 'smooth'

Dimples DON'T create drag. If they did, golf balls would be smooth. They promote separation of the airflow and as I said, reduce parasitic drag. This is sometimes called "skin friction" drag. Basically, if the surface is very smooth, the airflow stays attached to it for too long and causes high dra...

McLaren clearly haven't done that and it has been blunders from the pit crew as well as the pit wall that have haunted them. No idea what happened to Kamui in the race, lost track of him for a bit! But he still beat Perez, although Perez was very much thwarted ...

Well, Sauber is not exactly a team accustomed to winning, maybe this is one reason. Like the high air up the mountains, maybe they get some calls mixed-up, it will probably take them some more races like this to get accustomed to that feeling of being a front-runner and smooth their strategies acco...

Would love to see Sauber win before Peter steps down, but thats not going to happen tomorrow. Best hope is podium. That too is a long shot as no rain for tomorrow. Re: What was up with Perez's rear wing

In fact, it was Perez who ran into the back of Kobayashi (in Australia). In Malaysia what you see for Perez is just normal lateral flexing; it seems accentuated there because the braking zone is a bit bumpy. Kobayashi had a poor race in Malaysia due to gearbox (FP2), broken roll bar (FP3 + Qualy) wh...

Being fast isn't enough. It's about getting those points at the end of the day. Which is what requires to become a WDC in a fast car, to get those points(plus wins, that's always good).
