Round 5: Barcelona, Spain

The start of the race saw the pole man Bottas get a slow start and come under pressure from felllow front row starter Hamilton on his inside and Vettel on his outside approaching the first corner, Hamilton got through on the inside whilst Vettel locked up his front tyre and ran off the track on the outside.

As the cars settled themselves down we had Hamilton leading from Bottas and Verstappen who had managed to get past Vettel, then Leclerc in 5th, the two Mercedes cars in front were much quicker and were able to pull a gap with Hamilotn pulling a further gap on Bottas.

Vettel had damaged his front tyre when he locked up in the first corner and this caused him to struggle with pace and after a few laps a team order was given for Leclerc to pass him. Vettel wanted to pit for new tyres but this would have put him behind slower cars so he had to wait until a suitable gap appeared when he then pitted for medium tyres.

Next to pit were Leclerc on to hard tyres and Verstappen on to soft tyres, this allowed the Mercedes cars to then make their pit stops first Bottas and then Hamilton both on to medium tyres, this put Verstappen on to a 2 stop strategy whilst it was thought the other drivers might be on a 1 stop strategy in particular Leclerc on the hard tyres, at this stage we had Hamilton leading from Bottas, Verstappen, Vettel, Leclerc and Gasly.

Vettel was catching Verstappen but then made a second stop again onto medium tyres, Verstappen stayed out for a few laps longer before he also made his final stop this time on to medium tyres, this moved Leclerc into third place. The Mercedes drivers waited until they had a big enough gap to Leclerc before stopping, Bottas was first to stop onto soft tyres, these tyres being faster and good to the end of the race with stopping so much later in the race.

It was at this point that Norris and Stroll crashed into one another leaving both cars stranded just off the track, this brought out the safety car whilst Hamilton made his final stop on to the soft tyres, Leclerc also stopped for medium tyres this dropping him from third down to fifth place.

At the restart Hamilton immediately pulled away as on his fresh tyres he set the fastest lap of the race trying for the bonus point, Bottas tried to reply a lap later but was nearly 3 tenths slower, they were both allowed a high engine mode for their one off attempts.

At the flag Hamilton won from Bottas, Verstappen, Vettel, Leclerc and Gasly with Magnussen the best of the rest in 7th place.

Honestly not sure how I got a 4th place out of that, but I'm not going to question it. I think maybe my total lack of faith in Renault paid dividends, if a lot of other people had them in.

Not so bad for me today, Monaco is more unpredictable. It could be interesting.

3rd podium I've had at Barcelona (yes, I've got a list - yes, I'm sad like that) and the irony is they're always two years after the previous - 2015, 2017 and now 2019. Looking forward to the next one in 2021

It's weird how that goes. I have 3 podiums out of 5 tries at Abu Dhabi. I don't keep a comprehensive list -- just the numbers! -- but I definitely feel that there are tracks where I'm better than others.
