Am I really predicting both Red Bulls to make it to the chequered flag? This can't go well.
Why am I surprised? :x

Shoulda stuck with this one. ;)

Update incoming. No one got a Perfect Podium, so it looks like anyone who predicted Verstappen / Vettel wins the round. Surprisingly enough, it looks like that would be only TheDamus, giving Drive Sauber the team win. Official results in an hour or so...

MEXICAN GRAND PRIX RESULTS

The Formula One World Drivers Championship came - at long last - to a close in Mexico today, with Lewis Hamilton fulfilling and perhaps exceeding the potential of his W09 Mercedes to take a fifth world title. The actual championship, then, is pretty much over - Hamilton is the WDC, and Mercedes seem sure to take the WCC for a fifth consecutive year.

In terms of our little championship, things are far from settled, and this race meant a lot to all the individuals and teams still going for the title. With the Bulls raging in practice, predictions were strong for a Red Bull victory, with most entrants predicting that Max Verstappen would lead the way. And so he did: fully half the field picked up at least five points from making that prediction. But unlike some races, this was far from a binary result.

A sizable minority, feeling lucky or perhaps punch drunk, decided to put their chips on Ricciardo actually finishing a race and tapped him to place on the podium. Sadly, their hopes were shattered with only a small number of laps to go when the popular Aussie pulled over to the side of the road with a smoking engine - a sight almost as familiar in 2018 as Fernando Alonso pulling off the road with a broken car. With Ricciardo eliminated, so too went all hopes of a Perfect Podium - everyone who had Verstappen down to win had either Ricciardo or Hamilton on their podium, and neither of them were going to make it.

In the end, it was the placement of the Ferraris that determined victory. Only one contestant had Verstappen in first and Vettel in second, so congratulations to TheDamus for taking a rare solo win! Even more unusually, however, Remmirath takes a solo second for Drive Sauber, marking perhaps the first time in the history of the competition that a team has taken a 1-2 finish without tying anyone else for the top two spots in the process. WELL DONE, DRIVE SAUBER!

Individual Standings - Round Nineteen

Image

At the top of the standings, cm97 and Jenson's Understeer hold place in first and second, with Remmirath closing up by 1 point. The top three are separated by only 3 points between them, with an impressive gap of 9 further points to fourth placed Mod Titanium, who still heads up the chasing field despite losing the lead a few races ago.

In the rest of the top ten, robins13 sits in fifth place, 2 points behind Mod Titanium; Exediron has moved up a place this round and now occupies sixth position, only 1 point behind fifth and 3 behind fourth. It's equally close behind, with Mayhem one point back in sixth and coulthards chin another point behind in eighth place. Jezza13 has made it back into the top ten, 4 points back. Espo rounds out the top ten by dint of tiebreakers from Mod Onyx, who holds the same number of points.

Further back, TheDamus is the major mover, going from 19th to 16th by virtue of a first win since Italy. All the way at the back, Lotus49 has finally broken the tie with Flash2k11, escaping last place by a single point... for now.

Team Standings - Round Nineteen

Image

Things stay pretty much the same at the top, with No Limit Excedrin Racing and Bwoah Steering Wheel both scoring the same 10 points and holding relative station. It's a poor round for Sand Bag'n, however, with neither driver sharing in the podium points: they lose 3 points to the teams ahead of them, but more worryingly lose 7 points to Drive Sauber behind, who now close up to within striking distance of third position.

In the midfield, the two Mod teams are once again locked in close combat, with Crisis in Management scoring only a solitary point this round and slipping back relative to Management in Crisis; only two points now separate the two sister teams. Jalopy Racing holds station, six points behind the battling Mod Squads, but has lost some more ground.

In the Battle for the Back, Lotus-CC Racing's time outside 9th position was brief but sweet; a strong result from The Also Rans has seen them regain 8th place, relegating Lotus-CC back to last place.

CHAMPIONSHIP PICTURE

With only 28 points still available in the Individual Championship, things are starting to get real in terms of eliminations. Forty-four points and above has become the cutoff, meaning that the following entrants are now eliminated from mathematical contention:

Bentrovato
TheDamus

P-F1 Mod
Lotus49

Contestants who must score a Perfect Podium in Brazil to remain in contention going into Abu Dhabi include:

robins13
Exediron
Mayhem
coulthards chin
Jezza13
Espo
Mod Onyx
CarlPotter
Icemanjee1
Mod Blue

Only the top four have the luxury of knowing that they do not need to post a perfect result to remain in with a chance of winning.

CHAMPIONSHIP CLINCHING SCENARIOS

The championship can be clinched in Brazil if cm97 scores a Perfect Podium without any of the other top three recording more than a point. No contestant other than cm97 can clinch the title in Brazil.

BRAZILIAN GRAND PRIX RESULTS

Mercedes clinched the World Constructor's Championship in Brazil, but here in the Top Three Championship things are much livelier. The battle is set to go to the wire after a thrilling set of mixed predictions that saw the top three stumble a step for the first time in a while.

Friday practice painted an inconclusive picture, with no team seeming to hold a clear edge. The majority of entrants expected that Ferrari would remain the stronger of the two top teams following on from Mexico, and Vettel was the favorite to win with slightly over half the entrants selecting him. Those hopes were dealt a blow when he failed to take pole, but more finally in the race they were crushed when he proceeded to have no pace whatsoever.

For much of the Grand Prix it appeared that Max Verstappen was going to win, handing a clear victory to coulthards chin, the only contestant to select the Red Bull driver for the victory. Sadly, fate - and Esteban Ocon - had other ideas, and Verstappen ended up second after spinning due to contact with the lapped Force India. Hamilton took home the victory, with Kimi Raikkonen finishing off the podium.

Only one of us correctly placed the top two on the podium, and so it is Mod Onyx picking up a first win since the Belgian Grand Prix!

Individual Standings - Round Twenty

Image

Things are getting tight as the championship race draws to a close, and this result hasn't done anything to loosen it up at the top - quite the opposite, in fact. Championship leader cm97 failed to score, and his lead is reduced to only a single point from Jenson's Understeer, with Remmirath a further point back. These top three are certainly the favorites going into the finale, but they are by no means safe.

In fourth place, Exediron continues a late surge by taking second in Brazil: he now sits only 9 points out of the lead, but will require a Perfect Podium in Abu Dhabi to move any further. Mod Titanium falls to fifth place, 3 points back, with robins13 in sixth position completing those who are still contending for the championship, 2 points back of Mod Titanium.

A strong round from Mod Onyx has seen the biggest standings climb of the round, from eleventh place last round to seventh (and just out of contention). Mayhem and coulthards chin both failed to score, remaining in eighth and ninth. CarlPotter now rounds out the top ten, separated from Icemanjee1 by dint of a Perfect Podium.

Further down the order, Black_Flag_11 moves ahead of TheDamus for sixteenth place, with P-F1 Mod also passing Herb for eighteenth.

Team Standings - Round Twenty

Image

It's a good round for the championship leaders No Limit Excedrin Racing, who extend their lead by a further 2 points, taking it out to 9 points heading into the finale at Abu Dhabi. Bwoah Steering Wheel is in second, 11 points ahead of third-placed Sand Bag'n. Drive Sauber, 5 points behind Sand Bag'n, is the final team still contending for the Team's Championship.

In fifth and sixth places, the two mod teams of Crisis in Management and Management in Crisis remain separated by a mere five points. Behind them, however, there has been a change - a strong showing by both of The Also Rans has seen their team surge forward into seventh place, followed by Lotus-CC Racing retaking eighth place. The defending champions (who are no longer defending) of 2017, Jalopy Racing, fall to last place on the season, meaning we have the odd situation where both reigning champions - individual and team - are in last place in their respective standings.

CHAMPIONSHIP PICTURE

With only 14 points available in Abu Dhabi (there's no Abu Double here!), the following drivers have been eliminated from contention:

Mod Onyx
Mayhem
coulthards chin
CarlPotter
Icemanjee1
Jezza13
Espo
Mod Blue
Bentrovato
Black_Flag_11
TheDamus
P-F1 Mod
Herb
Lotus49
Flash2k11
TypingChicane

Leaving the following six to contest the final round for the Individual Championship:

cm97
Jenson's Understeer
Remmirath
Exediron
Mod Titanium
robins13

In terms of teams, the top four all have a chance at winning.

CHAMPIONSHIP SCENARIOS FOR ABU DHABI

cm97 wins the championship by default, or can guarantee it with a Perfect Podium. Scoring at least 5 points puts him out of the reach of anyone but Jenson's Understeer and Remmirath.
Jenson's Understeer must outscore cm97 by at least 1 point without giving away more than 1 to Remmirath. Jenson's Understeer holds two Perfect Podiums and thus wins every tiebreaker scenario.
Remmirath must score at least 3 points over cm97, or 2 if it's a win. Remmirath doesn't hold tiebreakers without winning the round.

For the other three, the picture is a little murkier. All three must score a perfect podium, but in addition:

Exediron needs none of the top three to correctly predict more than the winner.
Mod Titanium needs cm97 to fail to score more than a single point, with Jenson's Understeer and Remmirath not scoring more than three.
robins13 needs cm97 to fail to score any points, and Jenson's Understeer and Remmirath not to pick up more than one apiece.

Bring on Abu Dhabi! :]

Are the six of us still in contention going to be sending our predictions to somebody (perhaps one of the out-of-contention mods?) rather than posting them here?

As per tournament tradition, the six of us will send our predictions in secretly, to be revealed after the deadline. Last year - when I was also one of the people in contention - I asked Black_Flag_11 if he would handle it. I figure I'll ask him and CarlPotter (the former curators of the thread) if either of them wants to do the honors this year.

Of course, since we're the only two in the top six who are on the same team we might also discuss it from a team point of view... although there's no wingmen here! 8)

Alright, CarlPotter will be the official receiver of the finalists' predictions this year.

As a reminder to everyone, whatever the last prediction CarlPotter has from you is the official prediction. If you post something in the thread that contradicts whatever you send him, the PM will override it. You can send multiple PMs if you change your mind, however, as long as it's before the deadline (but please don't send too many, as we have limited inboxes here on P-F1!)
