Oh no JU. Say it ain't so.

You're pulling the plug after 8 races? No more Group Pick'em?

While i'd be lying if I were to say I wasn't disappointed as I enjoyed the comp and looked forward to your summaries, I can understand that on the list of life priorities this would be somewhere near the bottom along with cleaning your cutlery drawer and organising your DVD collection into chronological order and there's only so many hours in a day to achieve so many things.

I wouldn't say there was little interest as the comp always generated a fair bit of discussion and I for one was always keen to see those results and the accompanying summary posted.

Thanks JU for the effort you put into it anyway. It was much appreciated and I'll miss this small piece of anticipation after each race.

That's disappointing, especially to see the plug being pulled mid-season like this. With over 9000 views I don't think the interest is that bad, considering this is not a game in which you have to post new entries every race.
In the end though, I respect it's the game administrator's prerogative to quit.

Agreed; while I was doing quite horribly in it, I still enjoyed the updates, and I'll be sorry to see it go.

I think perhaps the reason the interest looks low is that since the game is mostly passive for us, we don't always (or even usually) have any reason to post when we aren't making changes. But since I just pulled out of the F1 Oracle competition because I didn't feel the time required was worth my return, I certainly can't fault you for essentially doing the same thing here. And I know how much time it takes to curate one of these things!

I understand why you wouldn't want to keep up with this given the amount of time it takes, but I also don't think interest was low. I know I was always interested in the updates and all the statistical information. I agree with the others that it might look like interest was less than it was since this isn't one where people had to post their guesses before every race, and a lot of people (myself included) probably don't always feel quite right making a post that's just commenting on how well they did that round.

Either way, thanks for running the game as long as you did! Reading the updates was always fun.

Agreed, im also not big on posting just to Showboat

not sure how we were supposed to "show more interest" when those of us who dont need to make team edits really dont need to post reguarding our teams. This game doesnt require us to post every Gp like other games do.

As the other fellow members have stated i always checked the score and read the updates. If you wanna just post the scores and not a write up that would be fine i think but its your call.

Would it be OK if I posted the scores after every race here? I don't think I can match the good write-ups that Jenson's Understeer used to do after each GP , but I think I can do the calculating of scores and transfer points.

So , Jenson's Understeer , are you OK with me posting the scores and continuing this game?
And other participants , would you still continue to play this game?

If you both agree, then I would probably continue. It wouldn't be the first competition to be continued by a different curator.

The write ups are a lot of the enjoyment, though.

I appreciate the comments, but ultimately my inability to create activity (and I do take the point that it is a game that is more likely to be played passively, but even so, it just hasn't been what I had wanted it to be) coupled with the summer being the busiest period I have at work, that I'm moving in a couple of weeks, and have holidays coming up as well, all just doesn't leave me with the time/energy it requires. As far as passing the torch to Icemanjee1, I've no issue with that, so I'll PM the link to my Google Doc and that can either be used, or Icemanjee1 can find whatever system works best as far as updating goes.

Great. Thanks for all the hard work you have put until now.

So , I'll try to post the Baku update by tomorrow , and Austria update later this week :)

Meanwhile , if anybody wants to use the transfer option , please indicate it below. Deadline is still the start of FP1 of each race weekend.

Azerbaijan Grand Prix Update

Image

Well , that was 'well done' now , wasn't it? Salam Baku indeed . After the series premier of the Baku's 'European Grand Prix' in 2016 was dubbed as 'boring' , they decided to rename it to the 'Azerbaijan Grand Prix' for 2017 , and that seems to have worked wonders for them. They managed to buck the trend of sophomore slump and how!! 1st lap incidents , cars clipping the walls , carbon fibre flying , VSC , SC , red flag , 2 title rivals colliding - you name it , the race had it.Only thing that could have topped it is if it would have rained during all of this. This also gave us the controversy of the year between Hamilton and Vettel , which dragged on and on , with everyone having an opinion on it. Finally , Vettel's 10s stop and go penalty was deemed sufficient from FIA , along with some community service to teach young kids in feeder series for the rest of the year.

And amidst all of this , the smiling Aussie Danny Ric once again picked off the pieces while everyone else was fighting with each other, and made it to the top step of the podium with a measured drive , becoming the 4th different winner this season. Under-fire Lance Stroll was impressive with his calm-headed drive , and looked to come home in P2 , but was denied by Bottas who recovered well in the end. Still , P3 was a great effort from the 18 year old. Vettel and Hamilton followed home , and Alonso scored the 1st points of the season for Mclaren Honda with a P9. And Kimi , despite his DNF , once again proved to be the master of radio messages , with his Steering Wheel rant getting an own video of itself on the F1's official FB page.

Enough about these guys now. Let's see how we have done in the game.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Podium Performers

Image

Maybe this was expected because of the crazy race , and hence this is on average , the 2nd lowest scoring round this year. It was a tight battle at the top , with the winner edging the runner up with just a single point. So ,drumrolls for... theferret's White Visor , on the podium for the 1st time this season , helped by his faith in Magnussen and Williams , wins this round ahead of mcdo's Uncle Ron's Retirement Rodeo , by just 1 point. Even after having many different picks in both these teams(theferret's Ham,Massa,Hulk,Mag,Williams vs mcdo's Vettel,Perez,Sainz,Gro,FI) , only 1 point separated them. Rounding off the podium in 3rd place , for his 6th podium this season , is Jezza13's The Grid Fillers , just 3 points off the winner.

1st: White Visor - 159 points
2nd: Uncle Ron's Retirement Rodeo - 158 points
3rd: The Grid Fillers - 156 points

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Rest of the Field

So , the rise of White Visor team to the podium means that there is only 1 team which hasn't been on the podium this year - Group Pickem's version of Nico Hulk , Icemanjee1 :( . With a score of 152 , he was the only other team in the 150's this round , and secured 4th place.Another team which is not having a good season this year - Herb's The Champions came home 5th with a score of 148. This year's leader TypingChicane & the Inflatable Shark Fins had an average round , and scored 146 points - same as Mayhem , by virtue of having same picks. Jenson's Understeer's WIN-MOOAR Racing came home 8th , just a point behind with 145 points. The one team who would want to forget this round is Peter McG's Bootleg Racing Honda , whose faith in Ferrari mainly responsible for the low score - 123 points(which is the 2nd lowest score this season for any team, just above the 105 scored by Mayhem in Monaco).

Icemanjee1 - 152 points
The Champions - 148 points
TypingChicane & The Inflatable Shark Fins - 146 points
Mayhem - 146 points
WIIN-MOOAR Racing - 145 points
Pheonix Racing - 138 points
Infiniti Infinity Ltd and Fountoukos13 - 137 points
Bootleg Honda Racing - 123 points

Baku points breakdown:

No transfers happened before the Azerbaijan GP

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Standings:

1. Uncle Ron's Retirement Rodeo - 1326 points(+1)
2. TypingChicane & the Inflatable Shark Fins - 1319 points(-1)
3. Mayhem - 1278 points(-)
4. The Grid Fillers - 1267 points(+2)
5. Fountoukos13 - 1253 points(-)
6. Bootleg Honda Racing - 1247 points(-2)
7. WIN-MOOAR Racing - 1240 points(-)
8. Icemanjee1 - 1225 points(-)
9. Phoenix Racing - 1205 points(-)
10. Infiniti Infinity Ltd - 1203 points(-)
11. White Visor - 1203 points(+1)
12. The Champions - 1195 points(-1)

The results of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix means that Uncle Ron's Retirement Rodeo reclaims the top position in the standings from TypingChicane & the Inflatable Shark Fins. Both have a good gap to 3rd placed Mayhem. The big mover this GP was The Grid Fillers , who gained 2 places to go to 4th in the standings , while the big loser , unsurprisingly , was Bootleg Honda Racing , who slots in 6th , while Fountoukos13 maintains his place. White Visor , due to the win in this round , are tied with Infiniti Infinity Ltd in the points table , but only moves up 1 spot in the standings , due to the latter scoring 1 podium more than the former. The Champions slide back to the final spot in the standings.

Transfer costs, driver/team points scores and transfer points remaining update to come in the next post.

Good work, Icemanjee1! And thank you for keeping this game alive. I thought you said you were only going to post scores? :)

Personally, I think it would be informative to include the (remaining) transfer points in the standings. As it's reported now, we need to do the arithmetic ourselves to find out what the true standings are.

What I mean is that the real score, assuming everyone gets the remaining transfer points at the end of the season, is different than the standings show.
If I added up the numbers correctly, the "true" (or "virtual", depending on how you look at it) scores are below.

Of course, that I'm first in this list and only second in the list you posted, has absolutely nothing to do with it. :o :uhoh:

1. TypingChicane & the Inflatable Shark Fins - 1519 points
2. Uncle Ron's Retirement Rodeo - 1498 points
3. Mayhem - 1466 points
4. Bootleg Honda Racing - 1447 points

OK , now I get it.

What does everyone else think? Should I just add the transfer points to the score itself. Because as far as I know , even Jenson's Understeer did not add that , but kept it as a separate table to be added at the end(I think he mentioned that he did to prevent 'inactive teams' - someone signs up, doesn't come back to the thread all season, and then receives a 200-point bonus by virtue of having made no transfers.). As of now , if a team has 3 such 'inactive periods' - those 200 points will be void.(Funnily enough , if that rule continues , then Jenson's Understeer himself might lose those 200 points ;)

Do you guys want that rule to be scrapped? Everyone gets transfer points? If yes , then I'll add the transfer points to the main standings from the next update.

Considering that up until Baku, I was the only person guaranteed to post something after each race, I'm relatively confident that I'm the least likely person to fall victim to that rule...

Anyway, the reason I kept those two things separate in the updates was two-fold. Firstly, so it was completely clear how many transfer points everyone had remaining, and secondly because until the end of the season, managers who were inactive could still miss out on them. It seemed a little unnecessary adding points to someone's score if they weren't going to actually receive them. If the inactive rule is being removed then I'd actually just do away with transfer points counting towards the final scores, therefore encouraging everyone to make transfers, but in general I'd be against changing any of the rules now. Not my decision now, though!

As with any competition - I'm dead set against changing the rules half way through.

I have intentionally avoided panicking about Williams lack of form, hoping they'll come good. I'm probably going to be wrong about that, but it could have been a good tactic! The only advantage I have is that I've not used any points!

You make a good point re: " adding points to someone's score if they weren't going to actually receive them".

So , I believe most of you are OK with the original method of scores - separate table for scores and transfer points.

And looks like the transfer rule will remain.

I do have a question to make. Does this mean i have to make at least one transfer every 3 races or just post on this thread to show that i'm active?

Also thanks for taking this up Icemanjee1 and also thank you Jenson's Understeer for creating and hosting gaming thus far. Having filled in on occation for the Top10 Competition i know that running one will be time consuming.

No need to make a mandatory transfer. Just post on this thread once in 3-4 races. It's just to know that you are still playing the game.

Austrian Grand Prix Update

Image

Well , that's back to the good old F1 we know. After the insanity that was the Baku GP , Austrian GP delivered some good moments at the start and near the end , but otherwise , a fairly normal race. Bottas's start was a point of debate , but was cleared by the FIA. And he won his 2nd race of this season, just edging out Vettel - like in Sochi. Ricciardo continued his string of strong races with yet another podium in 3rd , while Hamilton overcame his gearbox penalty to finish 4th. Romain Grosjean was another notable performance , finishing the race in 6th for Haas. And both Force India and Williams scored a double points finish. And we welcomed the return of Daniil 'torpedo' Kvyat , who took out both Alonso and Max , the latter who was yet again left frustrated by his rotten luck this year.

Enough about these guys now. Let's see how we have done in the game.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Podium Performers

Image

For once , a normal race is a cause of celebration here , because this was , on average , the 2nd highest scoring round this season , just behind Canada. And it was the current leader in our standings , mcdo's Uncle Ron's Retirement Rodeo , who triumphed with a score of 176 to take the win.His decision of having Vettel in the team helped him beat his nearest competitors by just 2 points. 2nd place was shared by TypingChicane & the Inflatable Shark Fins and Mayhem , with a score of 174. And rounding of the podium , for the 1st time this season , was... Icemanjee1 , in 3rd place , with 173 points , just 1 behind 2nd place and 3 behind the winner. With that result , everyone has now been on the podium in this game , atleast once this year.

1st: Uncle Ron's Retirement Rodeo - 176 points
2nd: TypingChicane & the Inflatable Shark Fins , Mayhem - 174 points
3rd: Icemanjee1 - 173 points

And in the case of another tie , we had a 3-way rush to the 4th place , with Jezza13's The Grid Fillers , Jenson's Understeer's WIIN-MOOAR Racing and Herb's The Champions - all ending up with a score of 170 points. Peter McG's Bootleg Honda Racing was next with 168 points , followed by Remmirath's Phoenix Racing with 163 points. And proving that success can be very short lived , last race's winner theferret's White Visor , ended up at last , with 148 points(Magnussen and Williams , who helped him win last round , majorly contributed with his low score this round).

The Grid Fillers , WIIN-MOOAR Racing , The Champions - 170 points
Bootleg Honda Racing - 168 points
Phoenix Racing - 163 points
Infiniti Infinity Ltd , Fountoukos13 - 156 points
White Visor - 148 points

British Grand Prix Update

Image

It was a dominant race for the Mercedes team, and Lewis didn't put a foot wrong , driving a sublime race to win his 4th consecutive British GP(5th overall). Fast charging Bottas came back from 9th due to a gearbox penalty to finish 2nd , giving a strong 1-2 for the Merc boys. Kimi Raikkonen , for once was having a good weekend - ofcourse something had to happen to destroy it. A tyre failure late in the race threatened to make his weekend far worse , and before Kimi fans took pitch-forks in their hands and accused Ferrari of ("tyre fail mode = activated") 8O somehow orchestrating this to let Seb finish higher , Vettel had a worse tyre failure in the next lap , while Red Bull pitted Max just to be sure he doesn't endure a similar fate(and continue his DNF spell). In the end , Kimi made it to the podium in P3,followed by Max and Dan(who started in 19th). Hulk was another star of the race , finishing P6 , ahead of Vettel , with Force India boys and Massa rounding off the top 10.

Enough about these guys now. Let's see how we have done in the game.

Podium Performers

Image

Here in our game , this race has ensured multiple 'twin' scoring - 2 teams scoring same points , and the 1st of them is for the win in this round. By having the same composition in their teams , TypingChicane & the Inflatable Shark Fins and Mayhem take the win in this round with a score of 182 points. This was 4th win of the season out of 10 races for TypingChicane & the Inflatable Shark Fins. The presence of Hulkenberg in these teams , along with a preference to Mercs , ensured they outscored everyone else. In 2nd place , just missing out on the win by 1 point , is the creator and showrunner of this game till Austria , Jenson Understeer's WIIN-MOOAR Racing , with a score of 181 points. Rounding off the podium in P3, for his 2nd podium this season, is Herb's The Champions , with a score of 178 points.

1st: TypingChicane & the Inflatable Shark Fins , Mayhem - 182 points
2nd: WIIN-MOOAR Racing - 181 points
3rd: The Champions - 178 points

Rest of the Field

Image

The 2nd twin scoring teams in this round included theferret's White Visor and Icemanjee1 , who scored 172 points , even though their picks are different. Next , the 3rd twin scoring in this round , has Jezza13's The Grid Fillers and Peter McG's Bootleg Honda Racing , scoring 166 points , again teams with different composition. A poor round for mcdo's Uncle Ron's Retirement Rodeo , his trust in Vettel and Sainz costing him dearly , left him with just 147 points in this round. And our final twin scoring teams this round , with similar picks - Exediron's Infiniti Infinity Ltd and Fountoukos13 , got 142 points. And in the last place is
Remmirath's Phoenix Racing , scoring just 124 points , his faith in Ferrari and Sainz costing him a lot.

White Visor and Icemanjee1 - 172 points
The Grid Fillers and Bootleg Honda Racing - 166 points
Uncle Ron's Retirement Rodeo - 147 points
Infiniti Infinity Ltd and Fountoukos13 - 142 points
Phoenix Racing - 124 points

British GP points breakdown:

No transfers happened before the British GP

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Standings:

1. TypingChicane & the Inflatable Shark Fins - 1675 points(+1)
2. Uncle Ron's Retirement Rodeo - 1649 points(-1)
3. Mayhem - 1634 points(-)
4. The Grid Fillers - 1603 points(-)
5. WIN-MOOAR Racing - 1591 points(+1)
6. Bootleg Honda Racing - 1581 points(-1)
7. Icemanjee1 - 1570 points(+1)
8. Fountoukos13 - 1551 points(-1)
9. The Champions - 1543 points(+1)
10.White Visor - 1523 points(+2)
11.Infiniti Infinity Ltd - 1501 points(-)
12.Phoenix Racing - 1492 points(-3)

There might not have been a change yet at the top in WDC standings in F1 , but here , there is one , and TypingChicane & the Inflatable Shark Fins goes to the top , both due to the win in this round and a bad round for Uncle Ron's Retirement Rodeo , who slip down to P2. Mayhem solidifies his position in P3. WIN-MOOAR Racing moved up 1 place while Bootleg Honda Racing slips down 1 place.Fountoukos13 contine their fall in the standings , now with Icemanjee1 overtaking them to 7th place. The biggest change this round is for Phoenix Racing who fall back 3 places to be last in the standings , due to a poor round , while The Champions and White Visor make up places at his expense , moving up 1 and 2 spots respectively , to be 9th and 10th in the standings.

PS: Since TypingChicane & the Inflatable Shark Fins and Mayhem have the same team composition , and the former being 41 points(and having 12 more transfer points) ahead of the latter , Mayhem has to take chances in the transfer market to ensure they can finish ahead. Similarly , Exediron's Infiniti Infinity Ltd , being 50 points behind Fountoukos13 in the standings(+12 transfer points) with a similar team composition , has to gamble with driver/team changes to get ahead of Fountoukos13.

Transfer costs, driver/team points scores and transfer points remaining update to come in the next post.

Despite how far I've tumbled down the standings in the last few races, I'm still not planning on making any changes! Although, maybe if Hungary goes just as badly I'll consider it after the summe break...

Aaaannd F1's back from the break. But 1st , let's see the scores for Hungarian GP

Hungarian Grand Prix Update

Image

Just when you thought Mercs had started to dominate the season with scorching drives from both Lewis and Bottas in Britain , Ferrari showed not to underestimate them , with a strong 1-2 finish in Hungary.Sebastian , after initial few laps , had a steering issue , and Kimi was all over the back of Seb , faster but unable to pass due to the Hungarian track being difficult to overtake on , and strategy of Ferrari pit wall to make sure Seb finishes ahead. Kimi was left to defend with all he had against a fast charging Lewis ,who after the pit stop was faster than Bottas , who then let Lewis pass for P3 with a condition to give back the place if he couldn't overtake the Ferrari cars.True to his word,Lewis let Bottas back.Further behind , Max had caused headache for his team by crashing into his teammate Dan Ricciardo , and got himself a 10s time penalty. Ric DNF'ed , not before uttering some words about his teammate on the radio.Once again , it's that man Alonso , who came home a fantastic P6 in his Mclaren-Honda , and even posted the fastest lap of the race. His fellow countryman , Sainz finished P7 , ahead of the Frce India duo of Perez and Ocon in P8 and P9 respectively. Stoffel rounded off the top 10 , in a rare double points finish for the Mclaren Honda.

Enough about these guys now. Let's see how we have done in the game.
