F1 Oracle 2016: 13 questions

Posted: Sat Mar 12, 2016 9:47 pm
by TypingChicane
We don’t have enough F1 competitions and fantasy leagues.
Er, yes we do.
But this one is different. Honest.

The rules are simple. Before every race weekend you predict the answers to 13 questions. Every answer that turns out to be right, earns you 1 (one) point. If you predict 10 or more right answers, you earn bonus points:
10 correct answers: +3
11 correct answers: +4
12 correct answers: +5
13 correct answers: +7

That makes the maximum number of points you can earn over the whole season (13+7) x 21 = 420. Player with the most points wins. Simple, no?

These are the 13 questions.

1. Pole [driver]
As in the official classification.

2. Race winner [driver]
As in the official classification.

3. Fastest lap [driver]
No explanation needed.

4. Quali surprise [driver]
This is the driver who qualifies highest compared to his WDC ranking. Official qualifying results (before grid penalties) apply.

5. Quali victim [driver]
This is the driver who qualifies lowest compared to his WDC ranking. Official qualifying results (before grid penalties) apply. Drivers that fail to set a lap time can still be classified.

6. Overachiever race [driver]
Driver who ends the race in the highest position, compared to his WDC ranking. Only drivers finishing the race in the top 10 (official result) are eligible. This is to avoid attrition to be the dominant factor. (A backmarker who finishes last will still finish the race higher than his WDC ranking if there are DNF’s.)

7. Underperformer race [driver]
Driver who ends the race in the worst position, compared to his WDC ranking. All race finish positions are eligible. Driver needs to be classified.

8. First lap hero [driver]
Driver who wins most race positions in the first lap. Finishing the race is not required.

9. First lap zero [driver]
Driver who loses most race positions in the first lap. Retirements in lap 1 are not included (driver may retire later in the race, of course.)

10. First man out [driver]
Driver that retires from the race first. Decided by lap count. So even if one retirement happened noticeably earlier than a second, if both happened in the same lap, both answers are right. Note that ‘none’ is a valid answer too.

11. Safety cars [number]
This is the number of times (different occasions) the safety car is deployed during the race. The number of safety car laps is not relevant. Virtual safety cars not included.

12. Race leaders (number]
Number of different drivers that crossed start/finish line first over the course of the race.

13. Classified [number]
Number of cars that are classified; note that cars can be classified after completing 90% of the race distance.

Example: Abu Dhabi 2015

1. Pole [Rosberg]
2. Race winner [Rosberg]
3. Fastest lap [Hamilton]
4. Quali surprise [Perez and Sainz, both qualifying 5 places higher than their WDC ranking]
5. Quali victim [Vettel, qualified 16th vs. 3th in WDC]
6. Overachiever race [Perez finished 4 places higher than his WDC ranking at the time (5th vs. 9th). So did Sainz (11th vs. 15th) and Button (12th vs. 16th), but both were outside the points. So Perez is the only right answer.]
7. Underperformer race [Bottas, finished 13th vs. 4th in WDC at the time]
8. First Lap hero [three right answers: Sainz (10th on the grid vs. 7th after lap 1); Vettel (15th to 12th) and Grosjean (18th to 15th)]
9. First lap zero [Bottas, 6th on the grid vs. 10th after lap 1]
10. First man out [Maldonado]
11. Safety cars [0]
12. Race leaders (2; Rosberg and Hamilton]
13. Classified [19]

For the Australian race, the WDC ranking of 2015 will be used to answer questions 4 through 7. This also means that, for Australia, the answers Magnussen, Gutierrez, Palmer, Wehrlein and Haryanto will be wrong.

Answers need to be in before the start of Qualifying of each race.
I know it’s fairly short notice, but if at least 20 want to play, I will run this competition. The results will be posted the day after each race at the latest.

What do you say? Do you want to be the F1 Oracle?

Of course, other comments are welcome too. Maybe you see a glaring omission in the questions. Or you think one of the questions is nonsensical. But I do suggest we keep discussions fairly brief to get this going as soon as possible.

Yes, getting all 13 right will be virtually impossible.
I want to keep the points system as simple as possible, hence the 1 point per question.
But maybe it's a good idea to increase the bonus points, say:

10 good answers: +3 bonus;
11 good answers: +4 bonus;
12 good answers: +5 bonus;
13 good answers: +7 bonus.

I'll certainly join in. I would personally say run it even if there are less than 20 people interested as you might get more people joining in as the season progresses.

Just a question. How can anyone be said to have qualified better than their WDC standing at the first race? What are you going to use as the comparison?

I addressed that issue in the OP:
Icemanjee1 wrote:For the Australian race, the WDC ranking of 2015 will be used to answer questions 4 through 7. This also means that, for Australia, the answers Magnussen, Guttierez, Palmer, Wehrlein and Haryanto will be wrong.
It's not a perfect solution, but I think it's better than leaving these 4 questions out for the first race.

I edited the OP to add the bonus points rule. Also, cleared an inconsistency between the order of the 13 questions and the order in the example.
Jenson's Understeer wrote:I'll certainly join in. I would personally say run it even if there are less than 20 people interested as you might get more people joining in as the season progresses.
I'm not saying I definitely won't run this if we don't get 20. I like this idea too much to run away now. Just didn't want to set the bar too low.
Herb wrote:Perhaps a thread on the main forum will attract some interest.
I'm sure it would, but I don't want to rub the mods the wrong way (just yet).

Made a new edit to the OP: to avoid possible confusion on question 11, the number of safety cars, I added the line that virtual safety cars are not included.

Ahhh I was debating Verstappen for quali surprise! Decided to put him for the race overachiever instead, dammit!

Kvyat as qualy victim was a stroke of genius though if I do say so myself ;)

Edit: just seen that Sainz got qualy surprise not Verstappen, never mind :]

Kvyat is in a good spot now to become either First Lap Hero or First Man Out.

Results are in. And we have our first (clear) leader!

Image

To clarify some of the perhaps less obvious answers:
- Race leaders: 3; Vettel 32 laps / Raikkonen 3 laps / Rosberg 22 laps.
- First lap hero: Wehrlein: 21st to 14th.
- First lap zero: Magnussen: 14th to 21st.
- First man out: Alonso and Gutierrez are both correct. Kvyat did not start (so wrong answer). Haryanto's DNF was given one lap later than the crash.

Remember that for the next GP, the current WDC ranking will be the base to judge answers 4-7. Drivers that are not currently classified will all be considered to be on 17th place.

All right, five points -- not bad! I notice nobody got the fastest lap, underperformer, or first lap hero/zero, and most people were right about the safety car.

For anyone who missed the first round: given the sparse scoring in this game, it's certainly not too late to get on board and still win.
That may change a little after Bahrein, as I think there's a lot of potential for bonus points this next race.
