Newsted - Heavy Metal Music.

Does exactly what it says on the tin, and gotta say its probably better than the vast majority of Metallica's output for at least 15 years. The lyrics are a bit cheesy, but then it is metal in the classic sense of the word. Nothing ground breaking at all, but a good album for what it is. Standout track for me is "King of the Underdogs"

Those dudes are making waves right now. I was at a music festival last week and they were playing last on Saturday night. I rarely remember an act getting such hype beforehand. And the show was brilliant too (apparently - I was elsewhere). Everyone was gone mad for them.

I'm so excited to watch the Killers perform during the Singapore GP. I haven't listened to their songs in a while so I wanted to familiarize myself with the lyrics again(especially of their not-so-famous songs). Really love this band. I wish Muse was performing too. That would've made the perfect weekend. F1 + The Killers + Muse.. Oh god..

I've been listening to a lot of U2 lately. I was telling this to a friend, when she told me that Paramore did a cover of "Sunday Bloody Sunday". being open to new music, I thought I'd give it a go, even though I've never really been impressed by their stuff before, and hearing their latest song on the radio made me want to heave.

anyway, long story short, I've had to listen to the whole "War" album several times while sitting in the shower crying to get the dirty feeling away.

Their album is amazing! I'm not surprised they are doing so well, such variety in their music, and they are two brothers UK born.
I would definitely recommend listening to them!

Was listening earlier to one of those "free samplers" you get with music magazines. One of the songs on there is by Alter Bridge.

Now I will show my hand right here: not a fan of the first 2 albums at all. Very average soft-ish rock music that was totally formulaic and that did nothing for me. Admittedly, my musical taste leans towards the more extreme end of metal so it was highly unlikely to appeal to me anyway. Then heard Tremonti's solo album and loved it. The bloke is an incredible guitarist and that album was a real tour of force. In my eyes it made Alter Bridge look even more average and uninspiring. Heard a few bits of the third Alter Bridge album and much preferred them. Still wasn't likely to buy it myself but I could definitely agree that was the best thing they'd done.

Now onto this song (It's called 'Addicted to Pain', lead single off the album if I'm correct). And I will admit now that there's finally an Alter Bridge song I can say I actually like. By far the heaviest thing I've heard from this band. The main riff leans much more towards metal than rock. The lyrics are much stronger and the vocals have a much rawer edge. I was almost head-banging at one point (and then realised 'Holy Hell am I about to headbang to Alter Bridge?') If the rest of the album is in this direction, I could feel myself really enjoying it.

I can see this alienating some fans though; although it's still on the lighter end of the spectrum its definitely got much less of the polish than the previous albums and a less commercial sound. So fans of that sound might find this song hard going.

I will reserve judgement until I heard the album, but it certainly has the promise of being (for me) the best thing they've ever done.

And now listening to Carcass - Surgical Steel.

As an Alter Bridge fan, It worries me that the new album might just be reheated leftovers from the Tremonti record (which I wasn't a fan of, but I can see the appeal). While I do like "Addicted to Pain", I can't put it with other Alter Bridge stuff, I have to be in a different mood for it, if that makes sense. I am a massive fan of the first two albums (Blackbird is actually in my top five albums, at the moment, at least) and while the third doesn't get me as much, it still kicks donkey.

I have very high hopes for this album though, I do hope it's grittier, hopefully with some of Myles Kennedy's blues and jazz influences coming through in some places, making a nice contrast with Tremonti's heavier style.

For what it is, it's really good. Just don't expect anything ground breaking from it. Recommended if you like the classic sounds of heavymetal

Polar opposites is not such a bad thing. Keeps life interesting. You will have to let me know what you think of it when its out.

That was really interesting. Not sure it's totally for me, but its a great take on a quickly staling genre. The vocals put me off a bit, they are a bit on the weak side but overall its pretty good.

Was playing Scar the Martyr (Joey from Slipknots new sideproject). Wasn't really impressed. It was solid but really nothing that hasn't been done to death already. Very average metalcore-esque music. The vocalist has some good lungs on him though

Now playing Testament - Dark Roots of the Earth. It makes me sad that this band never quite got to the levels of the "Big 4", they have some awesome albums. This one is great,old school thrash with a modern edge. It's certainly better than the last metallica (death magnetic) and megadeth (super collider) albums.

Yeah I guess the djent genre has hit it's plateau eh? I'm still a fan lol.

Listened to Scar the Martyr. I think they could easily end their songs 3 minutes earlier and still get their point across. Not bad though.

Now have new Born of Osiris on. Potential album of the year!

Newsted - Metal
Found their Full EP on Youtube yesterday. As Saz mentioned, pretty good, nothing to really shout about. Plain back to basics Heavy Metal, and it sticks to that genre, without wandering into the others. It does have a bit of Metallica influence of "Load" album maybe even "Reload". A few songs here and there. But then this is just an intro of their band and more material is yet to be released. As a whole its not excellent but it does show a lot of potential. Jason Newsreds gruffy vocals are pretty good, and can hold a song throughout, which not many backup vocalist have managed. All in all, good but not great. Hopefully later albums would be better.

Went to see Bella Hardy and the Midnight Watch last night. The girl can sing and they were Scots so a good time was had by all! Really lovely music though, I was surprised to find myself enjoying it as much as I did.

AWESOME ALBUM! Saw them live on that tour and am now imortalised on the live DVD just released. That album is also released in English too - the swedish version was a bonus disc on the special edition.

Went to a funereal of a friend today.

I never get filled at funerals, to me it is just closing off. The usual songs play and I sing out (I'm Welsh, and us Welsh always have Great Redeemer and blast it out ) listen to the blarb about the person etc, then to the pub to see them off.

Same today, until the music to file out plays. It was stairway to heaven. For some strange reason it touched me more than any 'service' I have ever been to.

Alter Bridge's new album is on Spotify. I don't have the funds to buy it at the moment, so this excites me so much

I'm only halfway through the first song (Cry of Achilles), but I am hyped! it's got an almost Iron Maiden feel to it. I was worried about this album for so long, but even if the rest of it is awful I will be happy with that one track.

saying that, this is my first listen and I liked ABIII for the first 10 minutes, before it got repetitive... still, I'm buzzing right now!

Edit: Now I've finished it, I thought I'd give a full review.

Without a doubt, the first three tracks are the stand out ones in the album for me, with Cry of Achilles being my personal favourite, and Bleed it Dry surprising me at how much I liked it. I didn't like Lover, it just didn't click with me. After that is a string of what can only be called generic tracks. Not bad, but they don't impress either, it's just filler. This is what was wrong with the last album (ABIII), It got to a point where it all sounded the same, and you didn't know what song you were listening too until the chorus came.

Luckily, Fortress's generic streak is broken by Calm the Fire, which I loved, it's like all the best bits of Alter Bridge in one song. However, then comes something that should never happen. Mark Tremonti singing. Alter Bridge have one of the best singers of the current scene in Myles Kennedy, I don't see why Mark feels the need to take another ego boost after his solo record (where he also "sung") by wailing over what could have been a decent track if developed more with a better voice. Maybe it's because Myles is a great guitar player too and he was feeling shown up, I don't know, but if we can avoid that in future, that'd be great. hopefully they don't perform that one live (on the 18th! exited? damn right I am)

After a brief return to the generic with Farther than the Sun and Cry a River, the last two tracks are back to the astounding nature that the record began. All Ends Well is an uplifter after a lot of aggression (for an Alter Bridge record), and would have been better if it closed the album, IMO. It had me singing along even on the first listen, similar to how Rise Today did from Blackbird. Fortress, the closing and title track seems to be, if i'm brutally honest, a rip off of Blackbird. title track, epicly long, a bit of a downer. The thing is it doesn't capture what Blackbird did, which was the emotion. or the musical genius. It's still one of the best on the album, but I found my attention drifting slightly. Maybe if it was put on before All Ends Well it would have worked, because AEW was such a natural closer.

Better than ABIII but they still seem to struggle to hold my attention and interest like they could with One Day Remains (8/10) and Blackbird (10/10). The good songs on the album are so good they make the weaker ones irrelevant and I forget about them as soon as one of the great songs come on. Hopefully the filler is exactly that and they stick to the brilliance for the singles.

7.5/10 for me.

The music in these games is so well composed. I really enjoyed watching the concert live at the Royal Albert Hall 2 years ago. Was the first time I'd watched an actual orchestra. Was blown away by the sound.

I know it seems to be all I ever talk about on this thread, but I saw Alter Bridge at Wembley tonight, and they were f*cking amazing. I'll leave it at that before people lose their minds because I never shut up about them.
