Not enough respect for drivers today?

Having followed the other thread about Alonso's recent respect comments, and watching the 1991 and 1996 Spanish Grand Prixs, it got me thinking are drivers today less respected than drivers from the 80's and 90's were?

It seems to me that drivers today are under so much scrutiny that they get crucified for the tiniest mistake by media and fans, and that they are more often than not given criticism instead of credit. That combined with the fact that today's drivers are racing under much safer conditions than drivers from previous decades, when people like Mansell, Senna, Prost, Piquet, Berger, Alesi et al could die driving, do you think drivers are given less respect? Listening to Murray, you got the sense he respected EVERY driver who was out there. So what do you guys think?
