Juan Manuel Correa's Injuries & Situation

I didn't think it was really appropriate to add this on to the Anthoine Hubert thread or the one discussing possible changes to Spa, so I've created a new thread to track updates to Correa's recovery.

Unfortunately, the news today isn't good. I'm sure a number of us were worried about the lack of details being released and his movement to an intensive care unit in the UK, but today his family has released the following statement clearing the details a lot (reported on motorsport.com and other publications):

“First of all, on behalf of our son we wish to thank everyone within and outside the motorsports community for the wonderful and caring get well wishes that we have received, as well as messages for a speedy recovery. We are confident that Juan Manuel will review them all himself once he is back in charge of his social media accounts.

“Honoring our son’s straight-to-the-point and honesty that characterizes him, we wish to update you on the status of his injuries and physical condition. As time has progressed, new complications have surfaced as a consequence of the massive impact he suffered Saturday in Belgium. On his arrival to London, Juan Manuel was diagnosed with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome. This is an injury considered common in high impact accidents such as this one.

“Unfortunately, this injury resulted in Juan Manuel falling into Acute Respiratory Failure. Juan Manuel is currently in an Intensive Care Unit that specializes in respiratory injuries. At this point of time he is an in induced state of unconsciousness and under ECMO support. Juan Manuel is in critical but stable condition.

"We are confident that our son will surprise us like he always does with his tremendous fighting will and strength and will recover completely.

“At this time, we kindly request that our privacy and space be respected. As a family, we need to pull together and be 100% there for Juan Manuel.

“Maria and I wish to take this opportunity to give our condolences to the Hubert family for their loss. Our hearts are broken, and we can only imagine the pain this loss has brought them.”

I'm hoping for the best, but but that's a lot worse than I realized. It seems that the fight for Correa is more than just whether he will be able to return to the F2 grid.

Whenever I hear of a driver in an Induced Coma, it sends shivers down my spine for the wrong reasons! Hope he makes it through the Motorsport world can't be jolted by 2 fatalities. Racing drivers take risks no doubt but nothing is more precious than life of the driver & for his/her immediate family members, relatives, friends & fans alike!

Sadly Exed it appears so.

It's tragic enough when anyone loses their life in motor racing, but when it's a young kid still chasing dreams, it just makes it all the more horrible & now this news.

Update from the Correa family:

“Juan Manuel remains in a state of induced coma with paralysis in order for his lungs to get as much rest as possible. Continuing to be assisted by an ECMO [Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation] machine many of the key vital indicators have improved slightly while others have deteriorated very little.

“We have been reminded by the doctors that as long as Juan Manuel continues in an upward trend of improvement, even if very little, it is all that we can ask for at the moment. Infections are under control and respiratory indicators remain stable and all vital signs continue to remain consistent and stable.”

Not much news, and hard to say if it's good or not. It sounds to me (very much a lay person medically speaking) that at least there is some change in his condition, rather than the more grim situation of Bianchi where there was no change day-by-day and doctors were essentially hoping for a miraculous recovery.

As another lay person medically speaking, what I took from that was that the induced coma is related to giving his lungs a rest rather than assisting in repairing a brain injury. The only thing anyone can do is wait and see.

Yeah, I was just about to post that. Sounds like good news from the perspective of his survival, but not so much from the perspective of his continued racing career.

Obviously the first of those is far more important, so overall good news.

Some more genuinely good news: https://www.autosport.com/f2/news/14627 ... -on-sunday

Correa is fully conscious (!) and doctors are intending to proceed with surgery to determine the full extent of injuries to his leg. His racing career may yet be in doubt, but it appears that the possibility of Correa succumbing to his injuries is now behind us.
