Let me add Russel in here. He was some 1,7 sec faster than Kubica. It's not his fault that Williams is so slow. In being faster than the experienced guy who is sharing his equipment, he did all what is needed for his very successful debut.
I have to wonder if Kubica will see the season out if he continues to get out performed to that level in by far the worse car on the grid, this can't be what he dreamed about?
Wait the gap only ended up that big because of the contact with the wall. Yes that was driver error on Kubica's part but he's not 1.7s slower than Russell
I got that too late. But, Kubica was last in all sessions.
That’s not quite true. Kubica beat Russell in FP1

I think we’ve got to give Kubica time, he is essentially a rookie in this formula again as it’s completely changed since 2010. I think it’ll end up being a good battle between Kubica and Russell...I just hope the Williams will improve over the season relative to the competition.

From the looks of it, Mercedes were producing MUCH more power on Saturday. They also seemed to have superior turn in and traction in the low speed corners. Look at the side by side video. Hamilton pulls away under acceleration AND under braking. Qualifying was a slaughter.

Don't suppose anyone has seen a Hamilton vs Bottas comparison like that? I want to see the last sector as Hamilton was slightly down after S2 of his pole lap.

Yes I get that but I'm also under the impression that Kubica may have been 6 to 7 tenths slower than Russell?

At the end of all the practice sessions Russell had done a lap 6 tenths quicker than Kubica and I believe that gap might have been similar after their first runs in Q1?

Eight thousandths isn't the end of the world but a good marker for the intra-team battle this year. 2019 is the year we should finally see how good Nico is.
Or maybe we are finding out about Dan instead of Nico? Maybe Dan is not top tier anymore.

Have to agree with this Lando Norris has pulled off a brilliant qualification for McLaren, could Alonso have done any better? Shows the Renault engine has the potential to challenge.
Well if Alonso couldn't have done any better then this would imply that Norris is as good or better than Alonso after only one qualifying session. That is some high potential praise you are giving him.

It's still early days but I did expect it to be closer than perhaps most people thought it would be.

But to what extent? Of course, I don't expect that the true gap in performance between Mercedes and the next best is 7 tenths. However, the gap this year might be more ominous than it was in 2018, where neither Ferrari driver hooked up a lap.
I think the gap actually rounds to 8 tenths to the next best car. Oh boy, this season could be dull.

With the ballast changes helping out taller drivers like Hulk this season, I expect Dan to struggle against him. I honestly see Dan as an Alesi/Berger type driver, Hulkenberg too if I'm honest.

That may end up being the case but we need more weekends for that to be determined

I'm not sure how big a difference it actually makes?
